Point is, I can look at a picture and basically tell what bass it is, P, J or other. But anyone who’s dead certain they can tell what bass is used or what guitar is used, I’d take the “under”.

Back to bassics (see what I did there?) the bedrock of Muscle Shoals was Hood’s Fenders and Occasional Gibson. Gibson still sells Thunderbirds like this.

Hey @buldog5151bass, were you referring to me as the person with a photo of a P for his avatar? That bass in my avatar is my 1982 Jazz in Olympic White that I bought in 1985. It has the 70's era pickup spacing (4"center to center) and a white bound all maple neck. Here's a larger version of that shot:

I was a P guy for years then I bought a J Bass and fell in love with the slimmer neck and versatility of the pickups. Then I got an active Lakland 44-02, which can tread the line of both. So now I think I am an active guy.

I have never met a bassist who can tell a P from a J on a commercial recording. I know I can’t.

I think I could at least six times in ten, but not if the J bass were soloing the front pickup. Then I'd have no idea.

From what I can tell, yes, Fender went back to 60s spacing.
