I Like J Basses Better Than P Basses

That quality, is a feature not a bug for a lot of P players. The aggressive punch of a P pickup in the sweet spot is what many P players, including me, are looking for.
Now don't get me wrong, I love my J, much more comfortable to play, but at the moment I'm really digging the P tone.

I had all the same concerns. P-bass sounded ballsier, great in the studio (I still go to it for recording) but the Jazz was more comfortable.
Series switch brough the Jazz comfortably close to the P-sound, especially in a live context. So that's my go-to for gigs.

Yeah, I'd say I've watched this shift over around the last 10-12 years or so----I remember 11 years ago, I was doing a remote session for a serious heavy hitter producer here in La La Land--he said "just use a Jazz or a P--essentially--"use a Fender bass'". Frankly, that would not happen now. The P rules the roost in the studio world, it's undeniable. They don't really want to hear the Jazz(or at least not in lieu of a P, maybe as an option). More than one reason for this of course, as has been discussed ad nauseam on TB, but it is simple fact.
That said, I think we could see a shift coming--things just change, fashion and tastes morph. All ya need is a Pino or whomever to start rocking a Jazz again on major label sessions, and well, there ya go.....
I had a little epiphany recently with one project--a piano heavy kinda thing. After starting w the P as is my go to, the inherent mid scoop of the Jazz ended up working the best. I didn't want that perfectly pronounced, clear mid voice of the P. I needed to just be a supportive cushion with a little detail on top. I had to leave room for the piano low mids. Choose the tool for job I say.
A J-Bass is all I've played since 1966. Perhaps one day I'll buy a P-bass with a J-bass neck on it. Just love my 60's slim C-shape neck with a 7.25" radius!There, I said it

Sometimes it’s that bridge pup w/ tone rolled off a bit…. Yum.
J is the way to go. There I said it. P basses are great, but a J has more versatility to work with.
