Bull. Words evolve constantly, in every language. There are even some words and phrases in English that have evolved so much over time that their current meaning is the opposite of their original meaning. You certainly can change the definition written in a dictionary.

In my view, it's not the word that has changed. Rather, our understanding of what constitutes marriage has gradually changed over the centuries. At one time, a marriage was the ownership of a woman by a man. A woman could be fired from her job if she got married. She couldn't vote because she was not believed to have her own mind independent of her husband or father.

I'm talking about fewer than 100 years ago in the US.

In Madison, they recite the pledge over the loudspeakers every morning. Repeat after me:

"We live in a nation of freedom. Participation in the pledge is voluntary. I pledge allegiance to the flag..."

The kids recite the whole thing, including the first part that was added by the Madison School Board several years ago.

You can change the present and future meaning of words, but you can't change what they meant beforehand.

I don't know why you quoted me. What you have heard or haven't heard is not relevant to my post.

Oh, i get what you were saying, that you can't change what it meant in the past. I was referring to the fact that in a common vocabulary, versus from the early 1900's, alot of things have changed. Also, i have to say, who cares whether he says the pledge or not. He has a very common point of view, only thing is he got attention. That said, good on him. And he's got Mick Foley to protect too. :D

This "kid", is thinking, and analyzing. Not swallowing whole, and unquestioningly following what he's being told, like a lot of dumb rednecks do. I admire him. I was him, during the Vietnam war.

So, why do you immediately assume (if you don't, then please correct me) that the kids who are saying the pledge of allegiance haven't been thinking and analyzing, just because they agree to the principles behind the pledge?

One could infer from your post that anyone who doesn't stand up and disagree with the pledge, or the principles and traditions behind it, is a dumb redneck.

As a kid, I knew pretty well exactly what I was saying, why I was saying it, and I still wholeheartedly agree. Does that make me a dumb redneck? Just because I didn't stand up to be counted amongst the dissident in my elementary school, can you assume that I didn't think or analyze? Or that the other kids in his class didn't?

I just find it fascinating that in this country, so many are quick to praise the person decrying the horrors of an unjust government, and assume that the people who believe we have the best system of government on the planet are all brainwashed zombies.

I will correct you. The vast majority of people find it easier to "go with the flow". It takes courage and strength to swim against the tide. That child is doing what the youth should be doing; questioning, analyzing and identifying injustices, and making a stand. Right or wrong, he is acting on his concience. This does not make him unpatriotic, nor does it impinge on your 'civil liberties'. In fact, people like him are responsible for women being able to vote.

I'm UNWILLINGLY paying for the care of these people (it gets taken out of my taxes - or I go to jail), and I have to pay my own way while they get more courteous care - for free. Because I work hard, and they don't. And they can.

Yes, because when you get here illegally from another country, you usually just stand around all day...:(
Whether they have American rights is a serious decision to be made, but they at least have human rights.

Re-read fdeck's post about the meaning of marriage. Marriage as we use it today is NOT the same as it was beforehand. This is true whether you are looking at the word, the institution, or the concept. All have changed from the past to today, and they continue to change going forward. It's a continuum. There is no "it was always this one way and now somebody wants to flip a switch." Things evolve over time.

Rather than correcting anyone, you're still making the assumption that anyone who goes "with the flow" is doing so out of lazines or as a result of social pressure.
It takes courage and strength to swim against the tide.
It takes courage and strength to drive on the wrong side of the street, too.

....leading to my new bumpersticker slogan: 10 year olds do it with their conscience (but if they do it with yours, you're probably going to jail).

Mike

All that stated, I don't care what he says or doesn't say.
