I agree, it is excessive, for about half the price you can get the British Status bass with graphite through neck, and I guess it is the best bass compared to any bass at all. It is unconditonally stable whatsoever and has a loooooooong sustain !

For under 1k used, I've been enjoying a flea roadworn jazz bass, because it sounds good, I don't worry about knocking it around (although I really don't play in any bands where I can knock the bass against the ground whilst playing it), and it looks a lot like a "cool" vintage item, which is silly but fun. I admit some of the imperfect details are ever-so-slightly annoying, like the lack of body holes under the tug-bar holes. The finish-wear pattern is also, um, "coarse." The bass under discussion apparently has ALL of the replica details dialed... but really it's just a different proposition. I'd consider it an item of functional art, and as many have pointed out, a cool way of raising money for American Alzheimer's Association.

I was disgusted at the price til I saw that it is an item in limited quantity (and that the proceeds go to charity). There are only 26 world wide, I initially assumed that this was his signature model. That being said, I do think that in general MusicMan instruments are overpriced.

To spend over $2K+ on any bass is absurd to me!
Just not worth it to me - ymmv aat - in materials, labor, and/or craftsmanship.
But then I buy used and from pawn shops. My used Sterling cost $850 from TB. LOVE IT!! {{{ <3 }}}

Mine is 25 years old and I bought it ~5 years ago for $750. So, for roughly 1/10th the price I'm good with mine (even though the proceeds are going to a good cause).
