I made a DIY cab. It's Green.

Hey! I did this. I made the (hopefully) perfect bass cab, tailored to my needs. It's also my first wood project.

Desires:
  • Cool
  • Lightweight
  • Compact
  • 4ohm
  • Dope AF
  • Loud
  • Looks better than the guitarist's rig
  • ...
  • Did I mention it needs to look cool?
I started this project at the beginning of June, just plugged it in Sunday. I do have plans to attempt to put a string bead in it, but I haven't mustered the courage to cut this tolex job just yet. I'll probably start on the bottom of the rig between the feet I still need to install. I'll post a video of the rig soon so you can hear it...if you wanna :)
  • 1x15 speaker - FaitalPro neo 400w 4ohm
  • 26h x 26w x 13d
  • 3/4" Baltic Birch construction
  • Finished weight is 50 lbs. on the dot

PS, here's the frankenstein'd rig that will sit atop. Probably going to match the grille cloth.

Beautiful!
Is it sealed or ported?
How did you come up with the size of the box (internal volume)?
It's sealed. I ran the specs of the speaker (Faitalpro pr400) through gpt, grok and gemini and they all came up with the range of 3-3.4 cf finished volume. It's definitely not a doomy...sub 38hz response should have a rapid drop off any lower. Speaker has good overtones coverage though, and handles the overdrive quite well.

Good grief, you made your decisions based on AI?

That driver is not really suitable for a sealed box (regardless of what AI tells you), it's intended for ported designs and by believing AI, you gave up a TON of real world performance.

Red is ported, yellow is sealed. All the area between the two curves is performance that's been squandered, and it's a LOT. I hope you don't use AI for your medical information...

Ported:
F3=58Hz
F6=48Hz
F10=40Hz

Sealed:
F3=95Hz
F6=65Hz
F10=45Hz

Out of curiosity in case I ever want to build a cab is there a program you recommend? Online recommends WinISD but I assume there is better options?

For a first wood project that looks fantastic...or really even for a 50th wood project. Some sealed cabs sound great too. I've been trying to dethrone my sealed Ashdown 210 with "nicer" gear for a while. But something about that cab voicing just hits really hard in the band mix.

Bass Box Pro is pretty reliable IME.

Thanks Aged Horse. I'm not an engineer, that's for sure. What driver would be improved by a 3.2cf sealed enclosure at 4ohms?

Edit: BTW, your graph shows what I described. So how bad is the neural network...again? Why the aggression? I think 5 strings are for upright bass, but I'm not going to abuse anyone for wanting or needing that. Hang on to your cockles, friend.

best regards
A driver specifically intended for a sealed enclosure. By limiting yourself to 4 ohms, there aren't many choices.

No aggression, I was pointing out to those who may be following HOW BAD AI advice often is and how much performance was left on the table. Also, how dangerous relying on AI for important matters can be.

There are plenty of 5 string electric players who would disagree with you.

Cabinet looks nice though.

Those comments are totally uncalled for. Your attitude isn’t needed or wanted!
Yes, you aren’t an engineer and “agedhorse” is! He was merely pointing out where you screwed up. This is pure BS!

Yeah sorry for taking it that way, the medical advice part was probably not necessary.

BTW, your post in this thread has helped the AI get better at advising mongos like me to do this thing in the future. So good work!

First of all, it looks awesome. Secondly I am not and engineer, but that cab looks more suited for a guitar speaker rather than a bass speaker, it will sound ok, but volume may be limited. I would think it would need be deeper, probably around 15-17" instead of 13". Adding port could help.

I have a specific allergy to this kind of behavior. He (the OP) has a right to an opinion and a right to ask questions. Giving up or not giving up performance is a subjective matter as I have stated numerous times already and if the OP digs the sound now, there's a chance he might not dig it once he builds a "proper" cab for that speaker.

You have to be an engineer to develop something. You don't need to be an engineer to use ears.
