I made a DIY cab. It's Green.

I read through that AI chat summary. My impression is that it's socially gratifying but technically empty. What I mean is that it's congratulating you for "breaking the rules" and is taking your side in an imagined conflict, but shows no sign of knowing what the rules are, or what you're actually doing to break them. The claims are neither true nor false, but simply empty.

My hunch is that if you find out what "the rules" are, you'll discover that design practices for bass speakers moved away from those rules at least 25 years ago.

My impression of widely available AI tools so far is that they're good for three things:

1. Serving as a search engine, especially now that Google has turned into an advertising platform.

2. Computer programming. I make heavy use of Github Copilot in my work. This benefits from the surprising amount of regularity in existing computer code. Also, it's pretty cheap to pay for the most advanced tools, compared to the potential productivity gain.

3. Writing text that's not worth reading. This isn't a slam. Most human-written text isn't worth reading either. Streamlining the process of generating this text could produce an efficiency gain that dwarfs the industrial revolution, and frees us to work on more valuable things, such as not reading stuff that's not worth reading.

I did spend some time today, with the AI tools, and asked a bunch of questions about speaker design. Since I also understand the design principles at a pretty deep level, I can make an educated guess as to whether the responses would be useful, and my impression is that we're not there yet. It will be interesting to see what the future holds. Meanwhile, I'm still employed. ;)

That was a recap. That wasn’t the full text of these conversations but I can understand the confusion. Also, it was one of perhaps half a dozen conversations revolving around my old SVT, the subsequent Fender amp and the options of an inexpensive cabinet solution. Trust me, there’s way too much assumption going on here because it’s a tender, if not threatening topic for some. Pm me your email if you’re truly curious to see the entirety of this exercise.

That's OK, but thanks. Fortunately it's not a threatening topic for me. I'm quite confident in my understanding of the subject matter, and it's documented in case anybody wants to critique it. I haven't done commercial speaker design, but it's been an interest of mine for a long time.

@AgedHubris, you made an anecdotal medical reference that and your facts are flat out wrong. Since YOU brought it up, tell us more about the Ld50 of those compounds. [insert Willy Wonka meme here]
The "problem" (actually, it's not a problem but a benefit when used properly) is the half-life of Moxi being 10-50 times longer due to high fat solubility, so with multiple doses taken (as was recommended on the internet for IVM), the substitution of Moxi bio-accumulated, which made the person quite ill. The same thing wouldn't have happened with IVM.

The information the person received about the similarities isn't completely wrong, but as with all things technical, the devil is in the details and that one detail turned out to be an important detail. Moxi is a single dose anthelmintic, it is NOT intended for multiple doses. I learned this probably 30+ years ago from a study I did some of the math for. It's also something that I still deal with in the horse world.

This is just an example of how misleading AI results can be... AI can be partly or even mostly right, yet the wrong part can be THE most important thing.

Thanks Aged Horse. I'm not an engineer, that's for sure. What driver would be improved by a 3.2cf sealed enclosure at 4ohms?

Edit: BTW, your graph shows what I described. So how bad is the neural network...again? Why the aggression? I think 5 strings are for upright bass, but I'm not going to abuse anyone for wanting or needing that. Hang on to your cockles, friend.

best regards
@agedhorse IS an engineer, AI is wrong more often than right.
AI is a blight on society.

This has been a fascinating thread in many ways.

I hope no one minds, but whenever there's a little drama in these threads I assign various voices to each post as I read them. So, know when you're posting that you may be read in my head as Paul Lynde arguing with Divine.
I was hearing : Walter Cronkite vs Sam Kinison vs Bugs Bunny…

But that’s just me

You know, there's an opportunity for you to learn something here as well, rather than making snarky posts.
I'm good, thank you. I also have my degrees, I've studied stuff, I also work with some leading personnel in certain areas and I am well aware of empirical approach.

It is however also important to not only blindly follow the engineering rationale but encompass cognitive approach as well. I shan't go deeper in this because it involves psychology in which I'm not sure how well versed you are in.

Anyways, eppur si muove.

i'm hearing peeps that need to get a room and get it over, this crazy dating dance of love....annoying in multi threads going....
It’s trend amongst those propagating bad information and advice.

The anger and shortness by many at TB is driving me away from here. I left for over a year and finally came back, but am about to leave again. Not fun anymore, just reading one mean post after another. I know, don't let the door hit you on the way out, don't worry i wont...peace
It gets old doesn’t it?

Rather than leave, feel free to report. The moderators take longer than people often want to act, but that's only because they are volunteers who tend to prefer to discuss among themselves in all but the most egregious of cases.

The rest of the internet is far, far worse, IME.

Just wow.

About 70% is accurate, the rest questionable.

That’s my opinion, you don’t have to agree.
AI just isn't reliable for high end research and engineering, especially if knowledgeable people haven't deliberately trained it on very specific data sets. ( at which point it can be very effective for specific tasks.) For anything cutting edge, good training data isn't just floating around on google. Also, if you are using it for high end science stuff, you are giving away your intellectual property for free to the AI company. It is good at finding jargon and buzzwords.

Agreed, this has been my experience as well and it applies across multiple (technical) industries.

I agree but I’m not going to let a couple of rogue members drive me off. I’ll just avoid it. I did notice however, some of the bashing posts have been removed either by a moderator or the members themselves.

Thing is, there is nothing to report here. What you can do for yourself though (people in general, not you specifically) is to not get offended for every single opinion that doesn't align with your current indoctrination. Now that, is a step in the right direction.
