I might have too many basses

If it's not affecting your relationship, your ability to pay rent/mortgage, feed and clothe the kids, then it's not too many. For some 4 basses is too many, for some 100 basses isn't too many.

There are a few archetypal sounds I want in my arsenal. I also know I can't play them all, so I think 4 basses is the magic number for me, but I only have 3 right now.

What I've seen with hoarders, they just seem to collect dumpster finds, flea market bargains, and collects basses for their awkward looks and extreme curiosity.Exotica. Those I know who likes to spend money on any bass (or guitar) there's very few of them that they care to make playable. They may change out strings, but when playing those unwieldy beasts (yes, bunnybasses, jerkweasel basses) you can't just but giggle at them and then after a few notes you put it down. I e those I know who collects up a dozen or more, very few of the basses are up to any snuff and none of them is suitable for any music. Mind you, they're not Fender J or P basses all of them, but they collect them just and only for their curiosity, and that they are rare find. Obviously, if they all cost as much as high end Fodera or Dingwalls, they wouldn't collect them in huge numbers. It's cheap garage sales often around and below 100 USD. All of them. Some of them are decent and above the bunny/jerkweasel basses. But do they play them? No, it's more like museum pieces or period pieces. I know of no one collecting them for investments though. Like buying just 50s basses from Fender and make them rise in value in the years. Like locking down huge amount of money, being dead sure you can get the investment back ten fold later on. There are those people too you know. There are 3 types of byuers, professional, collectors, and investors. Investors may not even know how to play those things at all. You know the "New York" thang of things.

I have just the right amount of basses, my fretted 6 and my fretless 5. Both built by me, so there is nothing better IMHO. Also, no cats, but my 2 dogs really like them.

Between my Fender Jazz 5-string, Squier P 4-string and a fretless Tony Franklin on the way, I have enough to cover my needs.

I have 7 complete basses and one partial bass. It's one or two too many for me, especially considering I'm not in a band or playing out at this point.

But the GAS is real and constant...

i have 3 basses . A 5 string expensive and good quality , a cheap but lovely 4 string and a fretless.

I really thought I had TOO many basses. My partner also feels the same. I definitely have to show her this thread. It would be hilarious.

If you still have a significant other as the poll suggests you haven't hit "too many" yet.

Too many is when either your spouse divorces you or you have to relocate your bedroom to the garage because the rest of the house is pretty much packed floor to ceiling with basses. (Whichever comes first)
