I feel like one of these threads needs to turn into the mega-thread "clubs." We can rant, reminisce, and post pics of the old glory days of big, heavy iron & tubes!

The all tube bass amps will always be around. They still rent those babies all night long.
I have a genuine question. What is the normal amount of volume you guys/gals have the SVTs on when you are playing? I'm not flaming, or being a weenie, but I look back on most of the places I gigged in and the thought of a wound-up 300 watter through a fridge just boggles my mind in regards to pure SPLs that would probably destroy the buildings in which we were playing. So, is it 1/2 way up on the volume knob? 3/4?
Also, would a lower-powered, say 40 watt, tube amp wound up to the same levels give you enough SPLs, (and/or tonal bliss) if using the same cab?
Theoretically, the Ampeg PF50T would do this.... give you that tonal bliss! But, for me -- I was always happiest with my SVT-CL (gain about 50%, master to the room - maybe 25%-40%). I gigged a B-15R (reissue) head on top of my 8x10 a couple times, and didn't like how my headroom disappeared. I always chose the SVT-CL (and I don't feel like I was too loud, too often).I have a genuine question. What is the normal amount of volume you guys/gals have the SVTs on when you are playing? Isn't the OD/hair an integral part of the tonal bliss of an SVT? Once again, no troll.Theoretically, the Ampeg PF50T would do this.... give you that tonal bliss! For me, yes.... but, that 100watt head just didn't have enough to push all that hair thru my 8x10.Isn't the OD/hair an integral part of the tonal bliss of an SVT? Once again, no troll.
Hmmmm.....so the driving of the speakers was as big of a component as the amp sound itself? For me, yes.... but, that 100watt head just didn't have enough to push all that hair thru my 8x10.
I guess so?!?!Hmmmm.....so the driving of the speakers was as big of a component as the amp sound itself?
