If I was getting a headless, the Frog would be on my shortlist. So would the Osiris and Vader from Kiesel. Ibanez has some interesting options now too.

Get the Dingwall. They work great in a dad band. LowEndLobster had a review where he swapped out the rotary and preamp for an East Preamp. Sounded great. I have the rotary and the passive tone control, just need to get the preamp.
This is why I like to read before I post.
I can't add anything to the above. I only support it all. I don't think you could go wrong with G&L.
A P/MM would be awesome in the situations you describe. Haven’t met anyone dissatisfied with a Sandberg.

Beware, a second "main player bass" is a gateway drug to ..... well, just look at some of the guy's collections on here.
One of the nice things about most 5'ers is that they're shorter than a 4 in line Fender - a 3/2 or 2/4 headstock is a good thing. I owned a 5 in line Carvin once. I was forever bumping into things with that bass, and with the point on it, a lot of the things/people I ran into didn't completely appreciate it. It's surprising what a few extra inches does to you.
I knew I was setting someone up - I almost took my own bait. Someone will be along shortly who will be unable to resist. Shall we start a pool as to how many posts before someone gives in?

FWIW, I also need a second main player, hopefully to take over to be my #1, and I went with a Serek.
I did the “second main player” thing… got a Nordy vJ5 and a classic Fender P. Both FSOs, but different enough playing and sounding. I use each in a different band.
I have a Dingwall NG-3 5 String. If I had to give up all of my basses, including my Alembic, and only have the NG-3, I'd be okay. Super versatile bass and it's in your price range. The only issue is after you get into the Dingwall thing, you'll probably order a Canadian custom (I know I did).

Used Dingwall or a New US G&L. I had a G&L and it is a refined Fender type of bass that kicks the poopie out of Fender but Dingwall has so many design optimizations and the most modern take on bass that I would like to give one a try before I got another G&L.
