I need another bass

Man so many choices....
80's MIJ fenders are solid choices, but probably bring more like $400.
I have played a few MIM Fenders and with a little work they play as well as my American made ones.
I like my Fenders but if I was looking a for a nice beater, I would also consider some of the 80's - 90'd Charvels. They are MIJ and solid basses. There is a couple on guitar center used for $400 and below with case.
Lot of good recommendations around however.

I currently have a flock of basses in the $800 to $1800 range. But in the not so distant past I was playing basses that cost under $300 each used.
I've had some pretty nice basses in that price range pass through my hands. My motivation at the time was to see what I really like in a bass before spending "crazy" money. It was fun to try out different feeling and sounding basses.
Among the many basses that spent time in my "bass harem" were a super clean Ibanez SR800, a made in the US Peavey Foundation, a Schecter C4 XXX, a MIM Fender Jazz, a MIM Fender Precision, an American made Peavey Dynabass, an American Made Peavey Fury and although it was total dumb luck, a MIJ Precision. (There are more, this is off the top of my head...)
For grins I just looked on my local Craigslist to see what is currently out there for $300 or less. There is a really clean LTD B4E that I'd check out for $250 with a gig bag. There is also a very cool 1980's Yamaha BB1600 with a hard case for $300.
While I was at it I looked on the Charlotte CL, near you. There is currently a MIJ Jazz bass with some "mojo" that I'd run to check out for $300. There is also a pretty interesting 2004 Schecter listed for $300, a Schecter Stiletto Extreme listed for $200, and an Ibanez SR505 for $300.
In other words, you can find some pretty cool stuff...
Save your money, keep an open mind and be patient. You can get some really nice basses in that price range if you take your time. If you find that they are not what you want you can sell them and loose little or no money and try something else.
