I need more motivation to play

Here's some inspiration to practice;

1) We don't want to hear a Claypool clone, so figure out how to differentiate your style/sound from his.

2) The DB is only gonna put out what you put into it, so keep plucking.

3) If you think you are better than all the other local bassists just because they don't do anything you couldn't do, you need to: a) listen to them closely and hear what they do BETTER than you, b) realize that technical prowess does not immediately equal musical skill, and c) just because you didn't HEAR them play anything you couldn't play doesn't mean they can't, perhaps they were holding back ey?

oh, and to add to boplicity's comment on playing with a band, i really don't care how good you are by yourself, but play with a band...even if you hate it. I think interacting with other musicians is completely different than just showing off at your guitar store. if you are the best bassist in the city, are you in a huge demand? i should think you would be.
so even if you hate your drummer, record something. let us hear the best bassist in Fremont, CA, even if you can cop claypools licks :D

wait a minute..... You've never seen anyone better than you... But you only like one (maybe 2 styles of music so you don't bother to learn the rest ie: jazz) but you've never seen anyone who can do anything you can't... maybe you should get your a** into a jazz club. Maybe you should learn some Jaco (I'm sure someone in Fermont knows how to play "like" jaco and is better than you at that cause aparently you cant/wont.) Maybe you should broaden your horizons and learn somehtign other than Les (Great has he is There's plenty of better bassists) Take you're DB learn how to play FOR REAL! try some Neils Henning Orsted, or learn how to slap it.

More importantly: STOP BEING AN IGNORANT FOOL

Do you realize how you are coming across on theese boards?? You sound like you think you are King S**t. IF you are that good, go buy a Fodera or F, hop on a plane travel the world and challenge other bassits. or just stay where you are stop being an idiot and learn how to play for real! Or do the rest of the community a favour and don't post here (or don,t be so ignorant in your posts) Maybe take up guitar, learn how to shred, where colourful tights and jump around on stage. You can also cover your neck and finger with gold. You have a lot to learn about Bass and life in general my friend.

I suggest you change your attitude or go on tour with Yngwie Malmsteen.

Edit: Maybe I'm taking theese posts the wrong way, but really, you're 17, you sure as heck aren't the best, and you sure as heck have stuff to learn, do some research and learn it, or just quit.

this thread is ridiculous, IMO just trolling for responses, but I will allow it to stay open now for pure entertainment purposes. PS, a GOOD bass playing isn't all about inflating his own ego, or only playing his own style. For your ago, and length of time you have been playing, I am not surprised at the arrogance and attitude.

Please tell why should I learn a style that I don't enjoy playing?

I do agree that there are better bassists than les claypool, too bad Jaco isn't one of them. I know this is all opinion. I don't want to turn this thread into an argument over who's better, but I think that Jaco was a one trick pony. He only new one thechnique which to me made his music very boring. I also think that his music was very random. However in my jaco bashing defense, I only heard 2 songs from jaco (first impressions are everything.) that didnt bloat my goat. maybe you can suggest some really good songs from him for me? maybe you guys can convert me into a Jaco fan. I'm a very open minded person.

You may think Jaco's songs are random probably because you don't understand jazz. This may or may not be true, but from what I've read, you don't understand the point of music. Claiming you're the best bassist in your area because you can play a few primus songs means nothing. You may be the best Les immitator, but nothing more. Jaco's music isn't random, it's Jazz. Music isn't about playing a fast slap riff and saying your the best.. Anyone can play what you play. Music is about friendship, and connecting with fellow musicians. You can impress some non-musician/bassist your age or younger with a happy little primus lick, but you're doing nothing but showing you can do someone elses work. It doesn't matter what you play. I can honestly say you are a cocky bastage. With that attitude, you're no Les Claypool, and definitely not a bassist.

why because you can't say you are the best bassist in town if all you can do is slap like Les. And Great as Les is (and believe me I LOVE Les) I feel as though he is a gateway to pompousness and people who think Oh I (think) can slap like Claypool I'm an amazing bassist. Thing is Les isn't a many trick pony, he often plays the same thing OVER and OVER again, believe it or not (But hey most peopel do have their "signature" sound/keys/scales etc.)

Another thing, being a good bassist does not mean being good at one thing, I rmemeber this qutoe from bass player mag, I,ll never forget it, it goes soemthign like : " no one likes a one-dimensional bass player any more than a one-dimensional lover" All that to say, you're not the best, drop the arrogant I'm great act, broaden your horizons, Go out listen to some different kinds of music, learn how to play them, start a band you enjoy, gig, don,t be so stuck up, one day you will get crushed, you will get crushed badly by a bassist who will make you like like a pre-pubescent kid who should be wearing a Squier P-bass covered in stickers slung around your knees by a 2" nylon strap. Maybe that will be the motivation you need (believe me it will happen, it always does)

Do you hate the durmmer because he yells at you because you cant play with the time signatures or keep the beat so he scolds you so you hate hm? (I'm not saying you do, I'm just curious) Those time signatures can be tricky, I'll be the first to admit it! Keeping the groove is a key element in defining a GOOD bassist. heck it's essential.

So, there I was, telling Vic Wooten to shove off, because he can't slap worth a damn, when Michael Manring butts in. He's like "Excuse me, but I do believe you're mistaken about the Lydian mode," and I'm all "Excuse me, do you play a Warwick Thumb 6er?" and he hangs his head and is all "No." And I'm all "That's what I thought, bee-otch." And they were both like "Damn dude, you got it going ON. Why don't you get famous?" and I'm like, "Because I'm better than you, and I like you guys, so I won't take all your money. Because if I did put out an album, then you know I'd take all your money." Then Mike looks at Vic, and he's all "The kid's right. We should probably take lessons from him."
But I couldn't be bothered. I had to go play my Warwick Thumb 6 string. Did I mention I play a 6 string Warwick? Not many people can, because it's so many strings, and a Warwick.

you've been playing for 3 years and you're the best??? i think you need to leave you're house. and join a band while you're at it.
i've been playing for 4 years and i think i suck(it's how i get better, but i do actually think i suck). whenever i see all these crazy sxilled bassist, it always motivates me to try new things and play more often.
