I need more motivation to play

It sounds as though the music you're playing is becoming stale to you. Anyone will get bored playing the same style of songs over and over. Thiings become routine and dull very quickly. I'll sidestep the thorny issue of how good you may or nor be and suggest that you get into playing some differrent types of music. It needn't necesarily be something complicated. Just something with a different feel or that uses keys, modes, time signatures you wouldn't naturally start out using. but it will give you some different options of where to take your playing

Got to this thread late, but it's a riot so I had to reply.

I love the fact that after hearing Jaco play on two songs, the claim of Claypool being the better player is made. I must admit that Claypool was a huge influence for why I took up bass and I had never heard of Jaco before I started playing. As much as I think Les rules, Jaco is much better...and I'm not referring to style.

Claiming to be the best in your city is just sad. Not saying you are or aren't, but to boldly claim it arrogantly, probably without hearing all the bassists around, means you are playing for the wrong reasons and makes me disappointed to have you in the 'bass family'.

Please slowly step away from the bass with your hands in the air.

after reading everyone's posts and reconsidering, i take back what i said earlier. I think everyone is being way too hard on you.

and since you have reached such a peak in your development as a player, there is nowhere else for you to go. you have achieved greatness farther than anyone could imagine. there is no point in continuing.

the answer is simple and clear; you must quit playing.

so do the right thing.

I've also been playing for three years now, I'm self-tought.
The first year I thought I ruled coz I could play some "Limp Bizkit" *barf!* I thought "Wow, their bassist gets paid so much coz he can do that, and I can play that so I must be soo damn good" then I got a smack in the face by other music like Chillis, and somehow couldn't play that. It took me a while to find out that he was slapping, so I watched a few videos and "learned" the basics of slapping.
And thought I ruled again. Then I met a bassist who had studied music, and we played a few gigs with his band. WOW, he was good. and I realised I was crappy again.

Now I still play in my old band and in a Primus/ect. cover band, other people (non musicians) think I'm great, but I know how much I suck.
The more you learn, the more you find out what you can't do, and where your weakneses are.
You said you were self tought... I find I am now having trouble developing my skills further without lessons and am planning to start taking lessons soon.
Maybe it would be simaler for you, a pro can always tell you what to work on, you can never finish lerning, becouse you can never finish making new things to learn.



It's not raly "if you can play it", but "if you can think of it"

oh yeah, NEVER judge ANYTHING by first impressions!

You just answered your own question. Your Highness clearly has at least one weakness. Don't know where to start? Start with guitar solos, if you can't come up with any bass versions, although I'd recommend the bass solo in Rancid's "Maxwell Murder". Got that down? Move to Randy Rhodes. If you get that far, I hear Bela Fleck is looking for a more talented bass player.

I have to find census information on his town to estimate whether he could, in fact be the best bassist there.

When I was 17-18 I was the best bassist in my town, too. There where four others. One was mainly a banjo player. Three were not very motivated to learn, and one of the three unmotivated ones gave up bass entirely to spend more time stoned. The banjo guy could play faster than me, but wasn't musical at all.

I was the best in my town, NOT because I was in any way 'good', but because the others just sucked so very very badly.

Maybe nukebunnys town is like mine was.

I just started this thread, & got thru the 1st page & decided to forego the rest... My only response is, I never realized playing the bass was about keeping score... I'm better than u,, bleh bleh bleh... Big F'ing Deal,, maybe you are, maybe you aren't. At least I have a soul, purpose, & desire! What have you got?

Quit. Seriously, you're disgracing the good name of all the rest of us bassists. You obviosuly don't understand the concept of music. If you planned on becoming this arrogant when you first started bass then you made the wrong instrument selection. Go pick up a guitar.

EDIT: I don't mean to imply that all guitarists are arrogant, but you know the stereotype...
