A Mint guard would look pretty sweet as well.
My vote would be against black. Contrast is what makes things have visual snap. I also believe that if the body is an attractive metallic color, you don't need a flamboyant guard. My CAR and LPB basses all sport plain white guards.
I'm not generally a fan of black pickguards on dark metallic red. I think white or parchment tends to look better.

One thing. If you have not ordered the body yet, consider getting the '54 body - much more comfortable with the bevel by your right arm. I've been there.

Maple. I tried to veer away from a white/parchment pg, but I keep thinking about it. That black abalone does look neat-o, however. The body is a done deal, the '54 would prob be more comfortable, kinda like a 4003s is prob more comfortable than a 4003, but nope, I needed the cool binding.
LOL...googled "candy red guitars"...they're all white/parchment/black! They all look great, however. It all depends how deep the red comes out after the final wet/dry and polish; if it's WAY dark, I might try a parchment or even the black abalone Buldog described above to give it a little contrast. BTW, I've used Hipshot bridges on the last two, anybody have any favorites? I have a Gotoh hanging around, just wanted to hear some thoughts.

that colour is close to my bass (Midnight Wine) and white pearloid looks good to me
Yeah I'm still a fan of the Black, maybe even a Satin black to give a gloss/shine contrast =p. Maybe being from GA I'm partial to Red and Black's lol... even though my fav color is purple
