Get a picture of your own face, and print that on a white pick guard. I guarantee you will be the only one who has that (because if not, that would be creepy). 
Anyway, it depends on the vibe you want to get. For a classic "surf" type look, mint or white pearl would be perfect, for a more modern rock look, I'd go plain black. I can't wait to hear what you settle on!

Just did some googling. Honestly, with the maple board I like the lighter (white or pearl pearloid white) guard. Here are a couple guitars with black and white guards. The color might not be that dark on yours but it will be close enough for conversation.

I've been playing around with the idea of exotic wood veneers as pick guards, when a PG is necessary. Otherwise, if I can get away without one, the wood grain or color alone is fine for me IMO.

This is purely subjective, but if it were my bass I would be concerned about the darkening effect all variations of black will have on a darker hue like red. It will make that red look three shades darker. If you're okay with that, go with some variation of black.
A lighter shade pickguard will have the opposite effect; it will brighten up the red and make it pop more. I also think parchment would look great and have the same effect.
Again, just me thinking out loud.
I had a wine with white pearloid like that. It looked great. Too bad it wasn't a great playing copy.that colour is close to my bass (Midnight Wine) and white pearloid looks good to me

Just purchased another pickguard from Warmoth (if anyone needs a black pg for a Warmoth '51 p bass cheap, pm me). The final verdict is...(wait for it)...white pearloid! Yes, check your tickets...Anyway, once I have it together, I'll post pics. The body is WAY darker red than I had expected, should be interesting. The parchment was nice, but the white stood out much nicer for my tastes. Thanks for the input, think I'm going to make something that incorporates a black abalone pg, really liked that.
