I Present the IdiotBox Effects's Blower Box

Can someone tell me how to get distortion like from the song H. by Tool with this pedal? So far I really haven't found a setting I like. My E string sounds okay, my higher strings sound hollow and crappy to be honest.

I'm beginning to think I just don't like distortion.

I play through a G&L L2000 into a GK 700RB-II.

I know the song is played in Drop D. Sounds like he is using more fuzz, maybe his colorsound tonebender possibly blended with his Rat pedal. Just a guess. I am sure someone will chime in who knows for certain.

He very well could be using his fuzz pedal for this song but I could've sworn I read somewhere he used his rat for that song. Either way, you have to remember, JC has a lot of blending going on in his rig. One rig for clean and one for dirty. In the studio that could be totally different. But either way it's difficult to match his dirty tones no matter what.

Marshal, have you tried stacking your BB with your ODB3? You may be able to get somewhere in the H. realm if you set the BB at low gain and the ODB3 to a higher fuzzy sound. Me try both pedals in different orders. The good thing is that both the BB and ODB3 low end retention is excellent which is an important part of trying to get that H. dirty tone IMO.

Thanks for the replies. I will try stacking it with the ODB3. I guess I need to fiddle with the settings more.

Yes, do that for sure. I believe you will be able to get what you are looking for with either both or one of those. Im not sure how much youve played with the ODB3 but it can get really crazy sounding with the gain and mix up high. Almost a fuzz. If you were to run the BB after it, you may get a pretty cool smooth yet fuzzed out tone. I think I will try this myself when I get home ;)

This is a very good point. It could make all the difference in the world.

Oh, it does for certain. Its hard enough to get his tone even with the same exact gear. In the end, no one is him and has his rig the way its set up. Not trying to sound like a know it, its just that he, and Tool and their music, is one of the main reasons I got into effects a couple years ago. Ive always been into Tool and effects, but I finally was in a position at that time between money and being in the right kind of band, that the effects bug bit me hard and Ive been swelling ever since. The swelling has subsided a bit ;) I first tried to get all the same effects JC used. I soon realized how hard to get a hold of, or expensive, some of the effects hes uses are. So I said the hell with it and made my own sound/board/tone. Im happy that I did get that inspired and by Tool and JC, I wouldnt be where Im at today. They are all a huge inspiration on me. Ive never tried to go out and copy anyone, its nearly impossible to perfectly mimic most of my heros tones, but I have been hugely inspired by them and that def comes out in my playing and its tone. Besides, what fun is it to try and exactly copy someone. Its fun to get close or try, but I love what I find on those journeys.

I ordered a Blower Box from Matt yesterday and paid extra to have it shipped overnight. Damn USPS! The tracking still shows that it's in Houston Texas and it's almost midnight the next day. I will say this, Matt is very quick to respond to emails.
Luckily, my Darkglass B7K showed up today. So I wasn't to bummed out.

Yeop. Another satisfied customer here. Email responses from Matt faster than my ex girlfriend texts me when she's angry. The box is cool and sounds pretty damn great. Exactly what I was looking for for the price with my EBMM sterling hs. Enhances the tones I'm looking for and still gives me dynamics when I want them.

Rockin.

I think my BB stayed almost a week at the Canadian border... I'm sure they opened it and went ***!!

Mine sailed through Canadian customs in like an hour or something. The BB was one of the fastest delivery experiences from the US in a long time. Who knows, maybe there has been a sudden influx of IdiotBox products across the border and they decided to get curious :)

^ Hahahaha, thats funny!

I´m still waiting for my BB to arrive ... USPS tracking: "Your item is being processed by customs" (Europe) ... i wonder what those custom guys think what it is when they check the content.
LOL! I bet they thought it was a nuclear detonator.

I received mine today and I'm in amazement at how bad ass it looks, but mostly how awesome it sounds with my B7K. Just ridiculous. All my other preamps are either being returned or put in storage.

I'm seriously thinking of selling the rusty box to fund a good boost......

Well, if you need a good boost and don't need a rusty box ;)

Seriously though, the Rusty Box is great at what it does, but, with all the other stuff you have, you have to ask yourself if you really need it. The RB is the preamp circuit, or close to it, of a Solid State Traynor amp. Sounds like you are looking at getting more out of your tubes than the Traynor TS SS sound.

I am indeed. But I really dig the RB. Like really dig it. But I can't think of anything else they'll sell as quick and for as much as I can probably get for it. Hmmmmmm

Not sure how many of you are into old school Swedish death metal, but this pedal can definitely nail that Entombed/Dismember/Unleashed etc. sound. I just cranked some more distortion, a tad more treble, and set volume accordingly and BAM! Buzzsaw city!

A guitarist buddy of mine might be getting an old Boss HM-2 so I thought I'd be ready. Didn't take long!
