I Present the IdiotBox Effects's Blower Box

Alrighty!! Soooooo I plugged in my Blower Box today. Ran it before my fuzz. My Grey Stache was sent back to Ryan so I stuck it in that spot for now. Oh my goodness! What an awesome pedal! With the mod this thing is just a beast! But guess what fellas...my Rat King isn't going anywhere! They sounded amazing together. Although the Blower Box can get pretty close to the Rat King tone there is something a little different. Most of you seemed to prefer that difference. Me on the other hand didn't think it was close enough to warrant taking my Rat off.

There is this kind of harshness the Rat King has that the Blower Box doesn't. Then the blower Box has this thick ballsy low end that enhances the distortion so nicely. Ran together OH MY! Too good! That's my opinion of it. Maybe I am a rat distortion guy after all. I guess I am not getting another fuzz anymore and I am ok with that! I will see if my impressions change on Tuesday after practice. I will report back then. So far to me it seems these pedals were made for each other. As much as I would like another woolly muff fuzz I can't warrant it. Hopefully Ryan will be able to do the tone bypass mod on my Grey Stache while he has it and It will hold my fuzz needs off for a while.

Your GS already has the TB footswitch mod right? If it does, you can do it easily regardless of whether he can do it or not. I think I may rehouse my GS later on and redo the wiring and possibly use one multi colour LED to save space.

No mine is in a small enclosure only one footswitch so I didn't get the mod when I bought it. I'm hoping he can add the mod on a toggle for me.

I haven't been on this Blower Box page in a while. I think it was a few weeks ago before I bought one. So I was surprised to see all the talk on the RatTail comparisons a few pages back, because thats exactly what I stopped by to talk about.
Within the first few pages someone made a "so much better than the Rattail" type comment. OK, so my interest was piqued.
I have had the Blower Box for about two weeks now. Its a nice distortion pedal. Its really hard to get it to sit nice in the mix because its very scooped. In my opinion, it is nothing like the rattail. Or the ProCo whiteface re-issue. It might be a similar circuit, but it sounds totally different and can't even really be compared. The rattail slices through the mix with hi mids. The BB, while it is a raunchy dirt pedal, is all lows and highs.
Don't get me wrong I like it. If I start a heavy metal band tomorrow this will be my go to pedal.
I'm gonna try to do a comparison video in the next few days. The rattail is so mid heavy that I'm gonna have to lower it significantly to get the volumes to match.

Turn the bass control all the way down to remove all the bass from the Blower Box and it will sound closer to your Rat Tail.

Did for me, right before I sold my Rat Tail. Maybe you should at least try it. :cautious:

The Blower Box only sounds scooped when you crank the bass and treble.
That's not necessarily true.
It is a great pedal, but it is scooped in the mid-range.
When clicking from disengaged to engaged it is obvious.
My drummer noticed it right off, when i turned it on he said "where did you go?".
These are real observations from real-world situations, no-one is bashing it, no-one said it sucks.
It's just different than other rat style boxes and isn't for everyone.
It's similar to the ongoing debate in the Darkglass thread where some of us think the B3K is to "fizzy" or "fine-grained" and some of us think the VMT isn't harsh enough.
There's always someone's personal preference that gets offended.
But I assure everyone, there is no offense intended.

It is definitely not the same as the RatTail/RatKing. Some people choose the BB over the RT/RK, some people choose the RT/RK over the BB. I'm kind of getting tired of RT/RK lovers coming in here and saying that people who have actually owned both and chosen the BB are wrong/unfair/big meanies. Sorry to say, but they are starting to sound like those "I don't use effects, the tone is in my fingers" individuals.

Can we all get back to playing with whatever equipment we like? As far as I know, nobody in here who has been signing the praises of the BB is an endorser from IdiotBox. Why is the RT/RK causing all this? There are posts in the Joyo club thread about people saying that the UltimateDrive is much better than the Demon. Where is the outrage about that?

*Note to self: I hope my last post is not going to attract the same attention on the Joyo club thread. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut...
I'm sure it will be okay.
I'd cut that nonsense off pretty quick.

I still think the UD sounds better than the OCD.
(see what I did there? devious, dastardly even)

Hey buddy, just because I dig my rattail doesn't mean that I can't come by this thread and discuss what I like and dislike about a pedal. YOU are the one who is creating an us vs. them vibe. I like them both and want to talk to people who use distortion pedals about it. Is that not ok dude???
Ya know whats worse than the "the tone is in my fingers" cats. The ones who complain about losing low end and use distortion pedals. You want lows, boost them on your amp and DO NOT clip your signal
Hahahahaha. Talkbass LOL

Well I can't wait to try out a Blower Box for myself. I was even going to buy JohnK's one, if the TB horde hadn't fallen down on him like it did... Right now I'm waiting a bit to see if there will be a further top jacks design revision ;)

Like I said, I never had the feeling you were badmouthing Fuzzrocious in any way. But I think it's comments like the 1006 and 1008 above that had vegas and me react a bit...

You can still buy a mod kit from him :)

Someone mentioned that they stacked it with a rat tail. I find that it stacks well with a lot of fuzz and dirty pedals, but in my experience it needs to be in front. The signal you feed it really matters. If I'm using a regular passive bass I need some kind of boost before it. But with my EGC, which is still passive, but super hot, it sounds great either way.
I guess the input is a huge factor with any dirt. But with this guy I really like it with a lot of gain before.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your message and assumed it was another "Vegas"-styled rant-attack.
