I Present the IdiotBox Effects's Blower Box

My BB is runnin' through a MESA 400+ (tube pre and power section), and I definitely don't have a scooped sound. I do agree with bassmusic that it has that metal sound, which I could see giving it the perception of a scooped sound, depending on the other factors we've discussed. The main thing is that it's cutting through and sounds good in the mix. I'm anxious myself to see what the analyzer says with it runnin' through a tube pre and amp. Thanks for the technical aspect shuman!

I will try running it through the LB-30. Its DI is post power transformer so it should give us an adequate picture of what the full tube treatment does on the BB. Tube compression often makes me feel like more extreme distortion gets a bit squashed and muffled.

Ok, so using the LB-30 complicates doing this at night when the kids are sleeping since I need to be plugged into a speaker so I just did it now. I will see if I can do more tests with more combinations later on.

All of these are with the open E string, no pedal on aside from the BB and the Enabler when I use it to try a Mid Cut (I just turn down the mids completely to show what a mid cut *might* look like). BB settings are everything at noon.

So, here it is:

Bass > Board > Roland Quad Capture

First Clean (just the bass through the board, only buffers and the SFX Micro EQ at 100% flat):

Second Clean + simulated mid cut on the enabler:

Also, I would like to point out that the bar on the right side is volume in real time and does not correspond to the volume level when I held the graph. So, it spiking there does not mean the level was different when I took the screenshot from screen to screen. I tried to keep levels relatively even so as not to show an unfair spike in a particular frequency for one measurement or another.

So, I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, but it seems like the scoop is around 250hz. Which makes alot of sense. Thats my favorite frequency to boost on the GK 1000rb/700rb (the low mids knob). I keep everything flat and boost the low mids to about 3pm. So it makes sense that, for my personal taste, the BB is cutting exactly what I want to hear more of.
But hey, just like we all pick different types of bands to play in. As bass players we all find different ways to clip our signal. I actually flipped my BB, and I have a new, smaller version on the way. I hear that he added a bit more on the volume knob on this smaller version. I'm looking forward to finding out if that makes a difference for me.

Actually, that scoop is there in the clean tone of the P-Bass, it's not related to the BB. The BB actually boosts those frequencies and adds to it. I'll try to graph it with the Eastwood to show it a bit better. The Scoop becomes much narrower with the BB on.

I still like it. Not as much as others but it will definitely serve a purpose for now anyway. I like the tone mixed with my Bottle Rocket quite a bit. To be honest though I prefer my Rat King for most of my distortion purposes and I am a little disappointed in the BB. Maybe I just had too high of expectations. I mean don't take this the wrong way. It is an awesome pedal! It sounds beastly! I just think I may have put it on a pedestal before I got to try it out. I will hang on to it because I don't want to regret getting rid of it so soon without more time to experience it fully. If the perfect fuzz comes along and I need to make room I know what I am taking off my board though. It wasn't the replacement for my Rat king that I hoped for is all.

So, ok, here it is with the open A string on the Eastwood Classic 4 with TV Jones Thundertrons (note that you would get something similar on something other than the open E on the PBass).

So, Open A Clean (no effect, no BB, no nothing):

Here it is with the simulated mid scoop using the Enabler:

Again, if you start with a mid scoop to begin with, as with the previous example of the open E in the PBass, you cannot expect not to have your distorted signal follow that a bit.

Stop half-way and pick me up!!!
Oh, and we can grab kleinenenten and franksgbass too!
Thanks guys, I'll be ready? When are you swinging by? ;)

As far as the 250hz area, I cut it slightly on my GK. About 11:00. At least I think it's a slight cut. GKs aren't flat at noon. I've never thought the BB was scooped, and I can dial in more mids at will on my bass if need be. Sounded great again last night!

Well, I don't think the PBass is really scooped. It's just the frequencies available at the open E string, which is what I tested in the first series of graphs. You cannot expect any bass to have a full graphs from 10 Hz to 20KHz with the open E string. That's why I was saying that the scoop visible there is not a scoop, it's just an absence of frequency there for that note.

Also, I am using TI flats on both basses and the tone 75% rolled off in both sets of graphs.

Well, like any other pedal on the market, it's not going to be the perfect pedal for everybody's tastes. I will still graph out the modded one when I get it done in a week or two so you can see the difference.

I don't hear a mid-cut when I'm using it, it cuts through the mix so easily, competing with a loud drummer & a guitarist that uses a lot of distortion and bassier tones.

My sound with it isn't particularly metal, though, more like a medium-low gain grind. So maybe I'm using it differently to everyone who's experiencing this scoop.

That is how I describe what I am getting out of it as well. That and some low gain distortion as well.

Same here. My distortion knob is only at 9:00 or so.

We recently wrote a new song and I'm using the BB through out the song. I'm still trying to settle on a gain level. I was bumping the bass and gain up to around 2 o'clock and treble just around 8 or 9 o'clock. Bumping the gain down to noon or even 11 really helps with the volume for me. If it's much past 1 o'clock it gets pretty crazy. Which is good sometimes. But I need to have a tame really low yet raunchy dirt for this particular song. The BB fits it perfectly. I'll have to make a demo track with the BB this weekend to show you guys.
