I really just don't like Fenders!

I need to get this off my chest. I've given them a fair chance, but I just don't like Fenders! P bass, jazz bass, bullet, jaguar, sig models, Squier, MIA, MIM, MIJ...I've tried them all and I just don't like them, never have!. I don't know why, but I just can't get into them. Granted, I haven't had the privilege of trying out a vintage one, but even if I did and loved the way it felt/sounded, I probably wouldn't shell out 1000s of dollars for one. There, I said it! :)

(PS - Take this thread with a grain of salt....it's Monday and I'm avoiding work!)

Hurrah for freedom of choice :)!

Chances are, if you don't like any of the ones you've listed, you won't like any vintage Fender either. So, look on the bright side, you've got a hundred+ other, non-Fender designs to choose from.

(:ninja: Good, that's one less person who'll outbid me on my next eBay Fender purchase :p).

Please share with the group where you have tried all these Fenders. Keep in mind that even the best instrument, if set up incorrectly, will play like ****. Big box retailers (all of whom carry Fender) tend to make little effort to make their instruments play well. I was just in a GC over the weekend - I'm there to buy a cord but after all the buzz I've heard about the 2008 J basses, I thought 'what the heck'...

The one US j-bass on the wall played and felt like a total POS. The strings were old, the neck was slighly bowed and the bridge was fully dorked up. I'd be willing to bet with about 1/2 hour of effort, that bass could have been dialed in and THEN you could see if it was good or not... But I didn't want to spend that kinda time just to help GC make a sale to someone else.

My point is this: Find someone who has a fender they like - another player, not a store - and play it. THEN make your judgement.

By the way, I'm not saying fenders suck or anything like that, so don't get upset with me if you're a fender player :)

As for where I've tried them, I've played on friends' basses (pro bassists who take care of their instruments) as well as reputable stores (i.e., Bass Specialties, Medley Music, Roxy Guitars, etc) in the Philly area. Just never acquired a taste for them.

As for why I am posting this....well, it's a Monday afternoon and I'm sitting in my office trying to avoid work!

So really, tell us how you feel about Fenders!:D

I actually went the other way, i did not like Fenders and have owned and played others and come to realize that Fenders have the tone i am looking for so i bough one recently (MIM P) and i'm very happy with it. That does not mean i will only play Fenders in the future but i'm glad to have one. It's all about personal preference. I'm sure with all the basses out there there is something for everyone.

THis thread may be doomed, but I'll say I like Fender's for passive, straight forward stuff. I have a Squire VM Fretless. I needed something cheap that played and sounded OK, passive, and simple for jazz combo stuff.

I have had J and P basses, but always seem to sell them.

For a modern, active tone, I like other brands.

Right on, I dont think anyone thought you were knocking on Fender. You gotta play what you like, all there is to it.

I'm a Fender guy myself, but it seemed like you were just stating your preference. No disrespect.
