I really just don't like Fenders!

When I was first learning to play i joined the school band....our teacher/instructor would only let me play a Fender bass that belonged to the school.....i tried to bring my B.C. Rich Mockingbird to school but he just kept ramming Fender down my throat, while talking crap about my ugly toy bass. He also would only let me play through the giant Ampeg amp which belonged to the school......later in life this put me off both brands...and sent me running in the complete opposite direction.....over the years i have tried from time to time to pick up a Fender bass and play them and each time i am disapponted.....while the P bass generally has an excellent sound i feel like somebody just handed me a 4 x 4 with strings stretched across it....Jazz basses i like a little better in the action department, but overall to me for my tastes the are simply lack luster....just a few days ago i was in the market for a New Bass....i walked into the local Mom and Pop and tried everything in the $700.00 dollar and down range (New and Used) which included some MIM Fenders as well as Ibanez, G and L Tribute, Dean, Godin, Yamaha, Gibson...etc. in the end i walked out with one of the new Traben Obsessions (yes with the cheesy tribal bridges) which cost me $525.00 and for my tastes in outplayed everthing in the store (but i seem to have a certain affection for odd basses)

I too have tried to like them, but just can't seem to get past my childhood experiences

to me they are kind represent the old guard....they do what they do well but i don't care for plain vanilla ice cream anymore....The worls is full of other flavors and I have to buy that New York Fudge Super Chunk...lol

Check my Sig and you will see what direction i went.....and still continue to keep goin...lol

I think the Traben basses have something going on with those huge ugly bridges. The 3 that I've played have had this great solid tension and a really nice tone. Same with the Ibanez ATK basses, that use a less ugly but similar concept for the bridge. Don't feel bad about choosing that bass - apparently, it's you! (Ugly bridge and all... wait, did I say that? ;) )

No actually you typed it....lol

i don't feel bad when i close my eyes an open my ears all i do is smile cause this thing is absolutely amazing especially if you like modern tone. The Wenge fretboard is like greased butter and the build is totally solid....the two MIM Fenders i played just felt like complete crap, although they sounded good

You are surely allowed to feel that way about a certain brand :)

In fact, I have felt quite similarly, but, recently, I have gotten into Fenders again - vintage this time. And that makes all the difference. I never really cared for Fenders from the 90's & 00's, but I decided to try out some old ones. Now I have a Precision 78 and a Jazz 72 - and they both play and sound amazing! The only downside is that they are 4-strings... I mostly prefer 5's. And Fenders 5's are not for me (haven't tried the Marcus Miller Sig. 5, though).

As you mentioned, you haven't tried out vintage Fenders - just do it! It's a totally different ball park! And if it's still not your thing, just sell it... You probably won't loose a lot of money :-)

Visually (or aesthetically, if you will), the only Fenders I've ever seen that tickle my fancy are the Marcus Miller and Roscoe Beck V.

Tonewise, I like them... between P's and J's, you can find a whole array of spectacular tones, but there are other brands that can give me that tone and also look much better to me.

In conclusion, Don't hate them, but wouldn't shell out big bucks for them... I think I can find a whole lot of other options that would fill my expectations within the 1000 bucks price range.
