I really just don't like Fenders!

You can put lipstick on a pig but that still won't make it a vintage fender.


jk, I love the fender P and J tone but have never felt comfortable playing either. To be fair, I've only sampled 4 strings and never owned one....their 5's could be a different story but I'm a lefty and they're few to be found around here.

This is my second time around for playing bass and don't seem to warm up to Fenders and I have tried. I did love my previous bass life Fenders which was a '62 Jazz and a 59' Precision (originals and not reissues) But the newer ones just don't feel right. It's not that I dislike the style since I am just finishing a parts bass that resembles a Geddy Lee.

We're all entitled to our opinions of course. I can tell you that I started on a MIA Fender P bass and got awestruck by the fancy active 5 string basses (actually I sold my P to get a 5 string Yamaha can't remember the exact model). The Yamaha wasn't a bad bass, it worked well for me for several years. I then got allured by the famous Stingray and fell in love with it. I guess through all of this experience, I was never sure what kind of sound I was looking for I just chased after the basses most people seemed to like.

To make a long story short, I am now playing a Fender P again and I really like it a lot. For me, it has become the sound I am most comfortable with and the closest thing to what I would call "my sound." For my high-tech "cool" bass I got a Marcus Miller Jazz bass for the times when I have my scooped, modern bass tone itch to scratch. I love the modern sounds too but overall, I am a fan of the fat and thumpy P with flats.

Bottom Line: I think alot of us go through phases of what we want in a bass and although you might never try Fenders again, they have been like a home for the prodigal son to many players.

To me Fenders are the Blondes of the bass world, everybody wants to say they have one to show how great they are and a bunch of other manufacturers "color" their basses to appear like them. Meh, I am an equal opportunity employer as long as long as she is versatile, solidly built, and passive/active if you know what I mean.

I really do like Fenders. Not all of them. Mostly the traditional 4s, Precision and Jazz. I've played some real dogs, and some that were so heavy they felt like they were bolted to the floor. Those, I'm not so fond of.
The ones I do like, I like everything about them. Just feel right, like a good leather jacket.

I seem to really like Fenders. Well, you know, hit and miss kinda thing, but overall I like Fenders.

However, I can't seem to like EBMMs! And believe me, I really REALLY want to, but it's just totally not my thing. I dunno, maybe I'm setting it up all wrong. But if I play with the onboard preamp, and THEN have to play with the EQ on my amp, then that's never really a good sign. Which is why I like my deluxe J-bass so much.

Should this be moved to the "I Don't like" forum?;)

Seriously there should be one on TB. It would be really really popular and allow everyone to say what they don't like in the one forum.
(this isn't a dig at the op btw)
