I think I found a 58 P Bass

It certainly looks like the original pg was just painted over (I've seen that before - not everyone loves gold ano). Overall, the bass looks pretty beat, but without playing it for yourself you won't know if it's a decent instrument. IMO, a vintage bass isn't worth much if it doesn't play well.

From what I can see it looks to be a real '58...neck pocket shows it was a burst, but correct me if I am wrong it appears to be a 3 tone, I thought the 3 tone came out in the 60's?

If that is the case then it has been refinished at some point in time already other than the strip. So my suggestion to you is go with somone that knows what they are doing and have it refinished in a period correct color that you like. As far as the neck in concerned if you are going to refin might as well refin the neck up to but not including the headstock. I do not care if an instrument is refinished...I buy to play not to just let them sit there and collect dust.

Wise words.

IMHO, this is a job for RSGuitarworks in Winchester, KY. The restoration they performed on my '55 was with a similarly compromised instrument. I might add that this instrument appears to have lived near the ocean, judging from the corrosion and stress to all the surfaces.

Never the less, I recommend stringing it up, patching the nut with some newpaper, and doing a quick fix on the wiring. Why? See if the pickups work and if the neck seems Ok as a player. BTW, the frets look OK and original.
