I think I found a 58 P Bass

I wouldn't pay 1k for it. It looks like hell, and even original natural/black makes me sick. Now, if it's original sunburst was still there with a (non-period correct) 3-ply black pickguard, I'd like it much better. Oh well.. I'm adding nothing here except my own ramblings.

I'm glad somebody out there can love something soooo ugly. ;)

I enjoyed reading this thread and seeing the photo's. I'm a believer of quality older instruments and it would be fun to see a bass like this taken to a true professional Luthier give an evaluation. (why does Luthier show up as incorrect spelling?).

I can't believe all the scathing statements about a bass no-one has held in their hot little hands!?

Not worth $1k !!??

That is a "rambling statement"...the freaking pickup & bridge covers are worth that!! LOL

You are new, let me explain the rules here. My buddy can't
sell it here, he is not a supporting member. You have to be a
member to sell here, and that's only in the classifieds.

I could sell it (in the classifieds) only if I own it. Which I don't.

And he won't take that anyway. Believe me, I tried.

That Bass is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

I'm not willing to pay $1000 for it.

Aw heck, Thor, just grab one of those Fiesta Red Road Worn P-basses, and enjoy the vintage feel, as the nitro inevitably gets it's own dings and personality.

Don't let any one fool you, the RW basses are as good or better than a lot of the vintage basses, IMHO.

I agree with Jim.

Just watch, if your friend is in need of money like you said, he might be up for a fire sale. A bass priced at its normal vintage price these days will most likely not sell too fast.

That bass, in the condition it's in, is worth a certain amount of money. My guess is probably about $3000. It's pretty rough, for sure, but it looks to be a true 58 P bass.

You might think that's nuts for what is admittedly a butt-ugly axe, but I can guarantee there's a whole bunch of folks who think that it is worth that much, and who will pay it if the bass were offered to them.

I speak from experience -- I rescued and refinned a 59P in similar condition, and was later offered another 59P (bad refin in black) by a very respected dealer in LA, that I passed on due to my finances at the time.

If you do some research, you'll see that some of the folks here (Dark Horse, Jim Carr, cripula, and a few others) are right on the money...

Sorry for the assumption. But saying you wouldn't pay $1k certainly imply's it's worth. To you anyway. And someone else who doesn't know it's value can take that as such.

Evidently, you are not familiar with the appointments and worth of this bass. If you did, and read the previous posts you would know there is a painted anodized pickguard on this bass. Not a 3 piece laminated one.

Look, point here is: these basses are all worth decent $$$ whether you or I want to pay or not. Whether trashed or mint!

Fender only made so many of these, and there aint no-mo!

I buy and sell all kinds of musical instruments, and nothing sets a customers heart on fire like an old, vintage guitar!! I've sold worse condition guitars than this '58, for lots more money! Of course it depends on many things being equal, but as long as the neck is straight, and playable it will sell...and if the neck isn't sound, the vintage parts will bring sometimes TWICE the value of the piece!!!

As a longtime player, and ethical collector, I will NOT breakup a guitar unless it's useless as a player! And being "that" for 35 years, I've only come across a handful of guitars that were NOT restorable. If someone is in love with a bass, or any instrument for that matter, if it is visable....IT IS RESTORABLE!!

Just my take! Peace to all....Interesting thread.
