Fine, I'll bite. Link ONE poster on the entire internets who is saying this. Just one. Other than you, obviously. Oh wait....
Yeah, somewhat....but the popular sentiment on TB these days seems to be "expensive basses are basically a rip-off".
It's a recurrring theme lately, reflected in many posts. I think it is entirely a hipster thing. It's so cool to rock the Squire and SX, you know?
Funny, but some have at least been honest and admitted that was their real motivation.
Another bad example IMO because once again it ignores reality and goes on assumptions.
Many Rolls are meant to be chauffeur-driven. Does everyone want to be chauffeur driven? Of course. Rolls Royce maintainence is astronomical. Who wouldn't want that? Some people actual like performance type vehicles, others couldn't care less, which car should they ALL prefer?
A Rolls. Duh.
What a lot of TB seems to be doing is basing their opinions on real life, not some ideal driven by who knows what.
Which car should everyone want, a Rolls or a Hyundai? You think the answer is simple, others understand that treating it as if it's an either-or proposition is just strange.
You're concerned with cost and fuel economy... get the Rolls.
You're not a "car person" and couldn't care less about them. You need to get from point a to point b... get the Rolls.
You need to impress your friends with your conspicuous consumption... tough call.
I've had a few opportunities to buys a Rolls and have even driven a few. I don't prefer big and cumbersome so the draw isn't there for me. No matter what it's worth, what it cost or what craftsman built it. I like sportscars and with few exceptions, that's not what a typical RR owner is after.
Then maybe you should quit with all of the general edicts. Just saying.

Seriously, what kind of reading is being done here to see what is clearly not written? My post are all still here. You've backtracked from your absolutes and as I've actually written a few times, those absolutes were the problem. Problems with boutiques can and do occur. Still want to resist that simple point?
So now the idea is that a builder must be rare to have had a customer with an issue? That too makes no sense. There have been issues with every damn brand of bass you can think of. Some were not satisfactorily remedied and people have sold instruments in situations like that. If you need to believe otherwise, cool.
Got to give you kudos for consistency. That train stays firmly on it's rails.
Some people say that things they don't care for suck. So why couldn't a Fodera "suck" to an individual? Why must they like it no matter what?

Well, SX basses ARE $11 and play better than Fedoras.

I don't have a problem with you. Like I said, I find this stuff entertaining. I really do... most people wouldn't put themselves out there like you continue to do.

. I'm on my way to a gig that pays $400 tonight. Tomorrow morning I have a rehearsal then it's off to a $300 gig. Then on Sunday I'll make $500 that morning. This is not an abnormal week for me. All of my boutique gear has been paid for via gigging and then some. So you tell me, since you brought it up... which kind of bassist do you "think" I am?
Here's the problem: you keep saying weird stuff. No one is making you do it. It really is that simple. Pretty sure you know that by now.

Here is one from "aussie player", in the Squire thread...which is very typical of the type of posts found on this forum.Now notice, the poster owns an Alembic but it his Squire that he loves the most.
My most expensive bass is an AlembicMy vintage bass is a 1966 Gibson EB2D I have owned since the 70's
My cheapest bass is. Squier Affinity V @ $225 delivered to the door. It is one of the best basses I have played and I have no plans to sell it.I also owned a Fender MIA Jazz 5 and when I played it side by side in my Hartke amps, I junked the MIA. It was inferior to the Squier in pick up volume, punch and tone. It also was not a better finished instrument even though the materials were likely better on "paper".
I can't speak about boutique basses, but I can guarantee (as an ex"amateur"rally driver) that I can have a lot more fun with a Hyundai than a Rolls!!

I'm saying that I can't imagine the value of a boutique bass being 4x or more better than my Peavey. You're right, I don't know. But I don't see how the quality of the instrument can be 4x better. I know almost any "boutique" bass is a overall better quality instrument than my peavey. My argument is that the value, the bang for your buck can't be "great" for these basses. I'm not putting them down, but their extra features are just that: extra. They are not needed, but are cool to have. I'm sure a luthier that builds these kinds of basses would agree with me completely.

Well, Brad, enjoy my reponses while they last. Because soon I will be leaving for MY weekend gigs, and though I am sure they are not as lucrative and impressive as your gigs are, I will be busy all weekend playing gigs out in the desert, and then playing an orchestra concert the next day. Meaning, I won't be able to contribute to this thread anymore for awhile, fun though it has been. Gotta go make money!
No, I can totally understand that. Rally racing is known for production cars.. I don't think you would want to bring a rolls out into the forest on dirt roads for a competetion!
Likewise, I probably would not bring a Fodera to a biker bar gig.
But maybe this makes sense: If someone hired me to do a recording session, and I owned a Fodera, A MIA fender, and a squire...I highly doubt It would be the Squire I showed up with.
