I think I stop believing in expensive basses!

This is part of the reason why many builders limit options, I think. People might whine a little that this builder or that is not truly a "custom" builder because they won't build just anything the customer wants. A builder needs to think of their reputation.

Exactly. Some learn the hard way that, with their name on the instrument, they can't really blame the customer who commissioned them to build something they were against (though I guess it would be cute to put them on the headstock as the designer with a disclaimer;)). IMO if a customer doesn't understand that, the relationship is on the wrong foot from the get go.

I'm not sure what all the disagreement is, here.

Do we all agree that MOST inexpensive basses like Squiers are made at a reasonably high quality standard these days, and are just fine for gigging or recording?

Do we all agree that you GENERALLY get higher quality when you spend more, albeit at a rate of diminishing returns?

Do we all agree that MUCH of the the time boutique builders offer extremely high quality and a high level of customer support?

Can we all assume that there are NO ABSOLUTES in any of this, and that there are exceptions to these generalizations?

Probably not. Then what would we have to argue about...

No, apparently we can't. That is what the disagreement is about, Woody. Minus the absolutes this tangent wouldn't have happened.
:D

Buy a boutique, things will be better.

I agree that some Squires and SXs, after modifications, are adequate for recording. But I disagree that they are inspiring instruments, or in any way have a special quality to them.

I agree that GENERALLY, the more you spend, the more you get, in terms of quality.

I agree that MUCH of the time, Boutique builders pretty much nail it. I trust both their products, thier reputations and the fact that you see thier work being used by excellent, pro bass players like Matt Garrison, Victor Wooten, Richard Bona and Jimmy haslip.

I agree that there are no absolutes, and that it is possible that there are some boutique basses I would not like. It also is possible I may like a Squire someone hands me. But to this date, and after 35 years of playing, I never have. And yes, I was able to try one of the VM Squires lately. The strings were hanging an inch of the FB at the 12 fret. The neck was curved like a banana. With a set up, I am sure it would be playable...but it did not give me any gas factor.

Then why are you fighting me over your absolutes?
:D

BTW I can't think of any bass regardless of price that would give me gas with the setup you described. I also understand that setups usually aren't permanent so I give the benefit of the doubt to anything that doesn't appear to me to be fundamentally flawed. String height normally isn't a flaw.

From a thread on tonewoods:

Lucas Vigor: "You have heard of the TV show Myth Busters? Well, I am the self-appointed TalkBass HYPE-and Armchair quarterback buster! And I call BS on MUCH of the stuff I read here!"

No rational, mature adult talks like this. You'll get nowhere, so please don't waste your time reasoning with him.

I, however, an umemployed and easily amused, so he's worth my time.

I'm easily amused myself and it's nice to decompress between gigs.

This place can be a great source for sharing experiences. It can also be a full of smoke. I don't dwell on gear I don't like and I don't begrudge anyone enjoying the gear they enjoy. I'm offering my experiences as a counterpoint, lest someone actually believes that some of this is unavoidable.
:D

I was letting it speak for itself. It was a pretty obvious gross exaggeration for effect I'd guess. Why would you even try it after simply looking at it?

Actually this does remind me of a call I got from a friend about a Brubaker at a GC. I stopped by to take a look at it. They had tried to adjust the trussrod and for whatever reason couldn't seem to understand the "turn it this way, the neck goes this way. Turn it the other way and it'll go in the other direction" thing. Trying tho straighten it, they kept cranking the trussrod until the strings were at least a half inch high at the 12th fret, which looked bizarre. Since I didn't have the proper wrench I suggested they send it to Kevin and he adjusted it back to normal and refinished the bass (they had kept it high on the wall near the cieling and a heater vent for a long period of time). Looked and worked like new when he got done with it.

So I'll add in that boutique basses aren't ignorant tech proof either.

Yes. I don't actually carry a ruler around with me...but the action was horrible. The tone was average. Nothing special.

Now, you can disagree with me all you want, but don't forget the basic premise of this entire thread was "I don't believe in expensive basses"...

So for you, Mongo, Spade2you, Modern Growl and all the others who also don't look up to expensive basses...good.

But I do and for some reason, none of you want me to have an opinion...or even worse, you just ridicule my opinion.

I have to say it again...I never expected this on a bass forum, this disregard and disdain for great, hi-quality instruments.

I keep a 2 inch machinists rule in my wallet.

I just "ridicule" your opinion that inexpensive basses are all crap and your opinion that everyone should hold the same opinion as you regarding inexpensive basses.

Personally I have nothing against high end basses. I've owned several and still have a Sukop and US Lakland. But I prefer my less expensive and DIY models.

I like rics no cheap bass is going to feel like my 2011 ric , the glossy fretboard , the fact it has NEVER been setup since I have owned it , just how it came from ric and it plays so easy. Whats the alternative? some china made copy? i paid 1080$ brandnew for my ric , a cheap china made one wont feel as nice , ever and its going to cost 500$ to get here , also I will be harboring a fake ric. Its worth the extra money to me because its more then twice as nice.

Now when we talk about P and J copies, I could play a classic vibe squier over an american fender and be happy. I rather buy a nice used USA standard for 700$ then a 350$ squier. Having owned more squiers then ANYONE on this board , that I have met thus far, (near 50) , i can say there are good ones and bad ones , just like a MIA fender BUT there are more lemons to weed through. That being said my favorte "p" bass would be a 1980s squier SQ P which can be had for 400$. I feel that on average a cheaper bass is going to feel cheaper, I have had my SX's and most dont play as nice as MIA fenders I have had , there are more issues like breaking cheapo screws but if a MIA fender is 1200$ and a SX is 100$ is the MIA 12 times better? No maybe 2-3. Thats in terms of feel , sound wise cheap basses dont sound worse they sound DIFFERENT like any bass sounds different then teh next , thus a audience wont notice a difference in sound but I notice a difference in feel of the bass and thats why i spend extra money , buy used , etc. If you buy a MIA used at a fair price its basically like borrowing it as you can get your money back whenever.

I think a lot of the people engaging with you actually have plenty of respect and care for nice basses. In fact there is no widespread and disdain for great basses here or anywhere. You made that up. It looks like you equate people criticizing the content of your posts with botique bass haters. Non-sequitur?

Some don't care for nice basses. Might be sour grapes. Most of us recognize that there are levels of quality that generally increase all the way up the ladder, despite your hyperbolic assesment.

Seconded. And the pompous, drooling whindbaggery of his prose is just comic gold to people like me, who reply to him and continue feeding his persecution complex.

Not to point fingers but of the folks you pointed out, I'd say Spade2you has the most disdain for boutique instruments of the bunch.
;)

This thread is like the Mothman bass thread. It has no redeeming value whatsoever, but I can't stop reading it.

The Mothman thread was better because it had sexually suggestive pictures. :)

True statement. However, noone is saying that inexpensive basses limit them...

I am. Inexpensive basses suck. They delude the buyer into thinking they have a nice bass, the same way that a new cheapie car will make you feel like you are driving a nice car for a while. Until you actually sit down in a real car and realize what it feels liek to drive a car where the accelerator isnt just an on/off button and the suspension isn't identical to a skateboard.
And yes I like my Subaru VERY much thank you!
