Hey people!
I had some discussion with the band about my bass tone on a song we are recording, and I would like to hear some more opinions about my tone. The clip is not the song itself, it is just a little something I recorded. Also, can you guess what bass and effects I am using?

Nothing that a set of flatwounds couldn't cure. I've got some five year old D'Addario Chromes that would do the trick.

Yeah I agree with Eagle, although I bet it's kinda different when it's not coming through youtube and my PCs lame 7.1 speakers at kinda lowish volume.

It does sound kinda thin, but it also sounds kinda distant too, how did you record that sample? Obviously the was a SansAmp involved but what else? Sounds kinda like a Jazz bass but is it just a DI sample from the SansAmp? If I was you I'd crank the Bass knob up and add some presence too.

Yeah I guess it hasn't quite got that harsh upper mid quality to it (that you can't seem to EQ out) that bassdrivers seem to have.

I don't think flats will help, correct me if I'm wrong but flats don't have a great deal of sustain do they? All the flat sounds I've heard have had warm low end but pretty muted sounding.

+1 but that might be what you are going for. Not for me at all....to much distortion.

Reminds me of some what Cliff Burton sounded like on some of his solos.

Some of you got it right
It is a jazz bass copy, with the tone knob rolled off, running through an Ibanez PD7, a Boss Cs-3 and a 15 speaker amp, EQ flat. I recorded it using the line out of the amp and a microphone in front of the speaker. The strings are .95 .75 .60 .40 nickels, so maybe this is why you say it sounds thin. Or maybe it is because I use a cheap mixer and a onboard soundcard.

Also, don't forget that most of us have $15 Walmart speaker systems on our computers, so even amazing tone will likely be crappy!
