Ibanez Ashula : Good or not?

I used to own an Ashula, and the concept in itself was very cool. I tuned it like an ordinary 6 string bass most of the time, and had some fun with it. However, after a couple of months I sold it. My main gripe with it was that I found the string spacing to be too wide. I'm used to playing 5 string Wariwick Thumbs, so I guess that had something to do with the problem. Also, I found that the output from the fretless side was lower in volume than the fretted side. Dunno if that is a common problem or just an issue with mine...

Yes I heard that more often :)

When it comes to the stringspacing I thought it was 16.5 mm, like all SR basses. How much spacing does your Warwick Thumb has?

I tried the only one I ever saw in person. To be honest It was a nice solid built bass for an ibanez. As nice if not nicer than any prestiges Ive tried. It was very easy to play the fretless strings because unlike fret lines the frets stick out above so its much better guide than fret lines you can hardly see in a normal playing position. I was really close to deciding to buy It. The thing is for a 6 string I think it would have been a little nicer if it was 3 fretted, 3 fretless. One big downside is you cant even slide an octave chord. But of I do pick up one used I probably would string it beaddg instead of eadgdg. Because for me it was extremely wierd playing a 6 without a low b. makes the reach to the e and a strings a bit rougher

I bought mine from a frustrated player :) I got 60% discount from new price and I am happy with it. Will never be a main axe, too weird and complicated , in any case it is an istrument that inspires new lines or way of playing and for that i love it. The previous owner changed the nut and strings to B-E-A-D-G-C but I changed it to B-E-A-D-A-D.
It works better for me. Also it looks really good and the sound is beautiful!
