Ibanez Short scale, multiscale, headless 5. Schwing!

It's 16.5 at the bridge and the width at the nut is wider than an SR as is the neck overall. I own an 846V and a pair of SR 6 strings. Very few mass made 6's have wider spacing than this. There's nothing I can't manage to do on any of them, so I'm not sure what your point is.

My point is that I simply prefer a wider spacing than 16.5-17mm at the bridge.

I'm glad you can manage to do everything you like on 16.5mm. I can also manage to get from Tokyo to Osaka on a kickbike... but usually I prefer to use train. ;)

(on an unrelated point: if the specs say "Saddles can be adjusted 1.5mm sideways", this is a bit pointless if moving the outer saddles by 1.5mm puts the outmost strings off the fingerboard.)

^^ Simple then. Get a custom made or buy another brand. Ibanez market what they know will sell and there are fewer people in the market looking for say a 19mm spaced 6 in my experience.

probably you are aware of this...

the Mono Rail 5HS bridge on the EHB and the MR5S on the non-headless allow the user to slide the string saddle sideways (+/- 1.5 mm) to change string spacing. On a 6 string bass, the equal division of the maximum sideways setting would be an additional of .6 mm. So, on the EHB1506, the string spacing actually can be widen from 17 mm to 17.6 mm max and on @A9X's BTB846V, it can be changed from 16.5 mm to 17.1 mm max.

Indeed - the 1.5mm total typically translates into an approx. 0.5mm usable average spacing, provided that the fingerboard is wide anough.

I've not tried this on the EHB1506 in particular, but I recall trying the Volo-6 & various other "prestige" models from the SR line which allow that 1.5mm shift, and I remember thinking "well, even if I could make do with the 17mm at the bridge, the hi-C will fly off the fingerboard."

I'm not sure whether this is also the case for the 5-strings.

^^^ Evidently to elicit such insightful and learned comments as these:

^^ Still not seeing the point in complaining about the bridge spacing on Ibanez headed 6ers in a tread about a new short, multiscale 5er.

;)

Beyond that - just discussing various specs of some of the basses that Ibanez makes, I wouldn't have thought is too much off-topic on a thread on... Ibanez basses. The saddle-shift issue putting the high strings very (too?) close to the edge of the board affects most of their models - not just the 6's. I've not tried it on the recent 5's, but some of the older ones, I recall were also like that.

is that better? In any case, I'm happy to move on. :)

^^ Ouch, that's about $A1700. Might have damped my enthusiasm some,

It's spot on the money.

If Ibanez didn’t plan on making this and I was to follow your advice I can’t imagine how much a custom fanned fret short scale 5 would cost me. If you think like this perhaps some enthusiasm might be alive. The 1005ms is a quality bass. The lovely example in the thumbnail is what half of the price gets you...I’ll stick with the Ibanez.

Here the list price of the EHB1000S-SFM is going to be IDR17.41mil (USD1,235). Usually, we could buy it roughly 15% to 20% less than the MSRP. So, it is going to be around IDR13.93mil or USD988.
Assuming an equivalent price that would make it somewhere around $A13-1400 which is OK.

Headless would be expensive because the bridge and headpieces aren't cheap, but I was quoted a FF 5 by a local luthier at about the same as the 1505MS, but that was not firm as he needed to check some details.

Though I never actually need more than 20, I find it kinda annoying that it seems like it’d have been so easy for them to give the A, D, & G strings 28 frets but then didn’t.

It would have looked nicer, and been fun to noodle with.

If it ever comes out in a pale olive green it’ll be an instant buy for me and I just might never bother with a Dingwall outside of a steal of a used deal.
