And a Smith or Fodera or STR or what have you will not hide mistakes either- basses at that caliber might make you a better player, but usually because they don't hide your flaws for you.

All of that clarity is a double edged sword because it will broadcast mistakes and poor technique!

So you suggest they've BUILT UP A WEB OF LIES? I simply cannot in good conscience buy a top-tier 'bootiq' bass made in some hodge-podge tawdry shim sham...how DARE they? Who do they think they are? if the walls aren't lined in Corinthian leather, how can I feel good about the 9 G's I wanna drop?

I disagree with your logic.... Chrysler Imperials were covered in Corinthian leather and were $h!tboxes. Marble or teak walls maybe?

No, the Gerald Veasley GV1006 you buy in a store is a Prestige instrument made by the "team J Craft" guys in Japan. The one, and I mean the exact one that Gerald plays was made in the LA Custom Shop, almost certainly by Tak Hosono himself, but that's it. Literally, if you are not an endorser then your guitar is not made in the Custom shop.

So I'm guessing there's something to justify the eye-watering pricetag? I mean, I'm sure it's a great bass, but why is it SO much more expensive than any other?

You got me My thought has always been you don't buy a Fodera or Smith to play little more than the first 4 frets, you buy those basses as much to show off your technique as to get a bass that doesn't impede your technique. I'm thinking more along the lines of leaning in the Hadrien Feraud style of playing, as opposed to 'Smoke on the Water' type playing

It's a well made bass handmade by a small number of people, it is what it is. And again, there are Japanese basses that cost a lot more than that - STR for example has a number of basses in the 5k to 10k price range. Just like in Brooklyn it takes a lot of money to run a high end company in parts of Japan.

But how is it different from the other Prestige models? Same plant, same staff, from what it appears same materials... I mean it's got an Aguilar preamp but other than that I'm stumped. Why does it cost 3-4 times what an SR5006 does?

I am guessing it isn't a high production model, they may well have sold less than 50 of them globally since introduction. As such, it may be a very few people who are at the high level of skill and familiarity with it that make it. It definitely doesn't share a neck with other models! Honestly, I don't know. Maybe they want to make 2K on each one?

The Ibanez website only shows the 5 string currently. No 4 string version.
