ID these songs

So I just received setlists from a new band I'm auditioning for in a week. There are three tracks I can't identify

Rich
Who knew
MD cowboy

I know I should probably just ask the BL but I thought before I do I could ask the TB sleuths if they can tell me what they think. :cool:

The fact that the band didn't give you all the songs to learn in this format:
"Song Name" by Artist plus Version of Song if there are different versions)

This is a red flag to me. (Also i'm having flashbacks to bands i was in with terrible BLs who did this type of thing.) :D:crying::D

It's the sign of someone who communicates poorly and assumes other people just know what they're talking about. Especially with a song titled, "Rich." I can only imagine how many hundreds of songs named "Rich" exist, and they just expect you to know what they mean like a psychic? Or MD Cowboy, which could be the name or an abbreviation of a name? Who knows? Clearly the band does but they can't be bothered to let you know.

I would straight up come back to the band with, "What are these three songs, and in the future could you please always tell me 1) Song title 2) Artist Name 3) Version of the song, or a link to the specific version you want me to learn.

I've had BLs do the same thing in the past, and no matter how many times i told them to give me all the information necessary to do their request, and explicitly told them what info i need, they almost universally agreed to do that, and then never did it again. Every single time i'd have to come back to them for the proper information. EVERY SINGLE TIME. (A lot of this was pre-Google. So you couldn't just look it up. But even with Google, now you try to look it up and get 10 million options that may or may not be right.)

Saying "Learn 'Hallelujah'" is almost as vague as saying, "Let's cover a song" without specifying what song. Like, I doubt you mean something from church because we're not a religious band, but maybe? I guess you mean the Leonard Cohen version? But maybe Bob Dylan's? Or Bono's? Jeff Buckley's? Willie Nelson's?

Like when guitarists at jams call a bunch of chords by their Note-Letter-Name, but don't specify minor or major, or the actual chord names for them, or what key, and expect you to just... guess? {snicker}

Clearly you've struck a nerve here :whistle::laugh:

My guitar player/Co-BL drives me crazy with this kind of stuff. He will text a song to work on. First thing I ask, what key is it in? He will snarkily reply, it's in the original key. And, I know I can look that up pretty easy, but I also know my guitar player. So, as I have learned over the years, I ask him, do you use a capo on the song? And sometimes he will say yes, I put a capo on third fret, etc., and then I say, well its not in the original key. He will say, it is in that key, I just have a capo, but it has the same shapes.

You can't see me seething right now, but i'm seething about his. :rage::bawl: :roflmao:

I just wanna yell "CAPOS CHANGE THE KEY OF THE SONG [expletive deleted]! DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND HOW MUSIC WORKS?!?!?!?!?!"

Or, "original key." Which is what? Do you not know the key and are avoiding the answer? Or are you just being obtuse and not telling me? "The key of E." [checks song] Dude, it's in E minor. You know there's a difference?

Sad to say, i know exactly what you mean because i've dealt with several guitarists exactly like this many times over. :meh:

Or when the album version of the song tuned to Eb standard (like a lot of GnR songs) and i ask if they're tuning down like the album or we're keeping standard tuning in E? And i'm told "We're doing it just like the album." So i tune down to Eb Ab Db Gb. Lo and behold, the guitarist is in standard tuning playing the same positions but a half step up from the recording, specifically like i asked and they said they weren't doing. :meh:

I could go on with these communication failures for hours. :wacky:

I have shown up to rehearsal a couple of times and we would launch into a new song for the first time and I would be like what the ****?! Then I would look over and sure enough there would be a capo on that guitar.

When the guitar player asks me what key a song is in, I usually tell him W#, Qb Minor, or something like that. :cool::laugh:

Wow. People seem pretty grumpy this month. Not just this thread. I get it - you've been triggered, but wow.

My offering:
If you've got a female lead vocalist, doing contemporary mix of rock and country, I'll guess "Rich" is by Maren Morris, a modern female country vocalist.
But yeah, you may have received less snark by simply asking your BL, LOL!

At least this way, you can sound relatively informed and hip to modern music when you ask: Oh, you mean "Rich" by Maren Morris?

Hope some of this is helpful.

Then of course, they often think the key is the first chord of the song, never mind anything that follows.

Your BL isn’t very bright or experienced. Massive red flag here. Hard pass.

If you do proceed, a proper audition is 3 songs max anyway. Choose 3 from the set lists you want to play and don’t more of your time guessing *or* asking.

More than 3 songs “audition” is another hard pass.
