idea for exposure? Any good?

I'm in an originals band playing dreampop/alternative music. This is a new route for us and we used to and somehow still are closely connected to new wave music. We kinda changed our main goal since new wave didn't really seem to catch on with folks our age (20-25 yo)

Around Halloween, one of the greater venues always has all the great ol' new wavers gather to do some gigs.

I had the idea of organising the following project. In the week that leads up to halloween, we will do one or more new wave cover nights. The rest of the band seems to be up for it and I decided that every band member can choose one song.

We will spread the word that everyone can post new wave songs on our facebook page and our song selection will be largely made up off what's posted over there. If someone lands us a gig, this person has drinks on us after the show and he or she can choose the closing song for that eve. Off course, we'll be sending word of this project to the smaller venues.

So, since I've never been in a cover band. What are the challenges involved (song rights, fees, ...)?

Is it wise to sneak some originals in the setlist (if the venue allows, we'd play an original AND a covers set, but this won't always be possible)?

fyi

the set list up till now:

Pixies - Wave of mutilation (rythm guitar)
Chameleons - Second Skin (singer/synth dude)
The sound - Winning (chosen by me)

My guess is that lead guitarist will be posting something by the cure and the drummer will be posting something by bauhaus...

sorry to be so old, but what's dreampop?

What people should call us nowadays I guess. I'm not into this classification thing myself, but a bandcoach advised us to stick to one genre classification. Our drummer came up with "dreampop". It's not a new term. It's an existing genre or such... but don't ask me which bands are also classified as being dreampop bands :').

The song "the pool" is what our drummer would call a dreampop-song. Do note that these weren't very professional recordings and it was our very first studio-visit two years ago. We should have some new recordings, though.

Personally, I would not go with the "dreampop" genre descriptor. I dont often hear people use that term, and its going to alienate your audience. Its already did so for Tampabass. Something more familiar like "psychedelic rock" if it applies, would probably be a better term. Or eve "space rock" because it at least paints a visible picture of what sounds are to be expected.

We always used to say "well, you know... post punk meets new wave with some psychedelic rock and shoegaze blended in" or something like that...

Personally, I hadn't heard "dreampop" before either... but when the time or drummer came up with it (during a bandcoach session of a local magazine we won) the reporter almost exploded with joy and well...

I have this feeling that when this article will be published, this magazine will be calling us a "dreampop band ".

We'll have to work something out soon as we don't have any recordings of the current line up and we're going to hit the studio by the end of the year to record our first EP. That's why I'm trying to raise exposure a bit with projects as the one described...

The band Im in could probably fall under the "dreampop" genre, so no way will I make mention of it in front of my band, lest someone think it a good idea.
When asked what we sound like I tell them we're folky psychedelic rock.
I think using 3 genres, like Myspace band pages, or Reverbnation does is a good way to paint a picture without going too in depth and pigeonholing oneself into some unheard of description.
