Identify the SX vs. Fender in the mix thread

Not for nothing, but one of the advantages of those "wasting" their money on SX basses is low risk of spending a lot of money.
Of course there is now a low risk of even losing money while trying to "get a bass that you have to upgrade before you use it" (not my opinion).
The last 7 sales for SX's on eBay cost the buyers.... (the envelope please):
$252
$202
$200
$194
$175
$152
$145
$137
Some of those were unmodified and actually sold more than they cost new...

If that nonsense keeps up I might have to unload my LPB fretless with the "old" headstock!

I always want to play with people who raise the bar as far as skill (or whatever one wants to call it). IMO that's how you get better. I've spent way too much time explaining chords, horn lines, percussion patterns, etc. to people who for whatever reason weren't on top of their instrument. It gets old after a while with the same people. I pay attention to everything that's going on in a song, not sure why more people don't but instead simply focus on their "part".

man i just had to write this out and email it to the keyboard player in the cover band i work with after a seriously questionable rehearsal.

i swear, if i gotta do that, i want part of your pay:D

Well, what do you want him to do, buy studio time and hire different artist to cut multiple tracks with his 2 basses and put that up? If you foot the bill, he may do that for ya, but otherwise I don't know what else you expect someone posting on a thread to do. Did you give Ed Friedland a hard time about his Squier/Fender shootout too? :D

I don't want him to do anything. I didn't ask for a shootout nor do I need justification for owning an SX like some of you.
:hyper:

I disagree in the sense that if you, Brad Johnson, played Savit's old Fender, you would sound like Brad Johnson playing Savit's old Fender. And if you then played Savit's SX with the same technique, the tone would be VERY similar what Brad Johnson sounded like playing Savit's old Fender. ;)

You wouldn't sound like Savit, but I bet the tones you get would be indistinguishable to most as well.

You don't think that is true?

There's reality and there's what you need to believe. Ofttimes they don't coincide. It's incredible the amount of assuming many of you are willing to do. Have you played Savit's basses? Have you seen me play? Do you even understand how much you don't know?

So no, I don't think it's true... how would I know without actually playing the basses in question? I might find one much easier to play than the other and that could afftect the outcome. I might find one simply more fun tonally than the other. And so on.

You don't think that's possible?

edit: Apparently Mongo doesn't think they sounded similar, let alone VERY.
:D

You're barking up the wrong tree.

I never said anything about the basses sounding similar, I said they "both can sound very good" and they do.

So you don't think they sounded similar? If not, where's all the performing as well as a Fender coming from if they're different? If you want how the Fender sounded and the SX didn't sound like it, it did not perform as well. And vice versa.

This thread is really in the zone.
:D

Well that's a snotty thing to say, Brad. And the very reason people call some botique guys arrogant, IMO.

This is your response to me saying that you would sound like Brad Johnson playing Savit's basses, and would probably sound very similar on both(using the same technique)? You can't even agree with that?
Keep on building those straw men and tearing them down, Brad, you seem very commited to that activity. ;)

Snotty? From the guy who just wrote this?

Right. How come you guys are the only ones complaining in is thread?
:D

There isn't a very good way to compare basses online. I've said that a few times already, yet you guys keep asking me what would be a better way to do it online. There isn't one IMO. Clear enough?
:D

As far as the boutique guys BS, nice label but again a big fail for accuracy:D. I own, use and recommend basses in a much wider price range than most bassist. A boutique guy probably wouldn't do that.

I couldn't care less about anyone calling anyone else arrogant... more than likely it's an issue with them, not the person they're complaining about. There was nothing arrogant about what you quoted. You came up with a corny set of things you wanted to know if I wanted as a better test. I told you I didn't want anything. I didn't ask for a shootout. Stating that fact is arrogant? And if you can't see the chips on the shoulders of some SX owners in this thread and on TB in general... oh well.

Yes, it's my response. If you actually read and tried to understand the actual words...

ah, hope springs eternal.

I could easily see mysef playing both basses and not sounding very similar. That's what I wrote. Did you even notice?
:hmm:

That doesn't make sense.

It might help if you read the posts and thought about it. Maybe you missed the following...

You said you didn't say anything about the basses sounding similar. THand says he'd bet that if I played both I'd sound very similar. The two of you seem at odds on that point. Hence the recommendation.

Have fun, mine's later.

Mine went great. Really got to cut loose on it.
:D

In a thread chock full of folks not getting it, this is a gem.

I'll bet you two think you agree.
:D

I'm posting from my phone, so I don't think multi-quoting and addressing all of this will be worth the effort.

I'm also tempted to stay with the current theme and be a smartass, but I'll pass this time.

I've got no problem with anyone thinking the basses don't sound very similar, so trying to create a riff between Mongo and myself won't work. I happen to think they do sound a lot alike, and that's not an accident since Savit deliberately modded it for that purpose. All I can do is use my own ears, and I'll be the first to admit mine aren't "golden". Others may very well hear something I don't. I hear nothing different that couldn't be attributed to the age of the strings. But that's just my ears and my opinion, YMMV.

:hmm:

While that is always possible, there is also a very real possibility that they would still sound very similar with you playing them as well. We should be open to that possibility too . :)

Also a while back someone had asked about what the stock pickup sounded like in a mix.

While it still sounded like a decent enough P bass, it didn't have the rich overtones I expect from a GREAT Precision. It was lacking "character" in the mix for lack of a better description. This REALLY showed up big time in a "live mix". The Lollar fills out the mix much better than the stock SX pickup IMO, and does exactly what I expect a really good P pickup to do. I fought with a couple of other pickups before I was getting exactly what I wanted. :)

The Fender "Original/62 RI) " P bass pickup (that was installed in the SX for a while) gave me what I was looking for, and the Lollar gave me just a bit more of that.

Actually, the Fener "Original/62 RI) doesn't give up much to the Lollar. They sound VERY similar as well, with just a bit more "richness, and overtones" being present with the Lollar.
