Well, not allowing Fender and your other limitations would make me give up bass altogether .

For me, I would have an F bass VF and a Dingwall Z. Two excellent, if expensive basses.

The Hofner would be one of my choices too. I have one, but not German made. It weighs hardly anything and gets such a fat bass sound - can't beat it.

Being that I play bass in a couple of bands right now, I would need one to be suitable for the stuff we do, and the other to be a backup for the first bass... so basically two basses of a very similar configuration if not identical.

If your hypothetical scenario also granted magical immunity to any damage or technical issues, then I would choose two completely different basses in order to get a more wide coverage of styles of music I like to play.

Well, my usual answer to posts like this is "If I can only have (insert restrictions here), then I wouldn't have any - I'm not a musician, anyway. I'm a Biker who likes to play bass guitars once in a while. I'd get rid of all of them, as well as everything else - except my custom Colt 1911; my Harley; and anything else I needed to live on it - and disappear down the frickin' road forever..."
However, since your post has some... interesting criteria, I'll play along. Especially since I just happen to own the basses...
1. Left handed, Korean '17 Danelectro Longhorn (I own 2 other MIK Danos, by the way..)
2. Left handed German Hofner 500/2 Sunburst Club Bass (all lefty Club Basses are made in Germany)...
