Correct, and try varying C2 and see what it does to the response. I suspect that this is one possible reason for the improvement. I also suspect that lowering the input impedance might improve (or at least change) the response with many pickups, as well as improve the signal to noise ratio.

I think it's a really cute project for anybody interested in building something for their bass. It's one of the better preamp projects that I have seen, simple yet effective.

Thanks for the kind words! Now my curiosity is piqued. I will measure the response with different C2 values. The only problem is that upgrading to Windows 7 has messed up my audio analysis software, but I think that I have a work-around.

Good luck!!! I have stuck with my analog and/or stand alone test gear for this very reason. Mac is starting to look better and better... except for the lack of support of anything outside the Mac world ;)

Do this with different (and hopefully closer) pick-up models too. It's generally a moving target.

I've got Linux as my "main" system, and there is an audio analysis package for it, but alas it doesn't work with my hardware for some reason. I hope to tinker with it a bit more at some point. The RTA program that I wrote seems to be in declining health -- people who have downloaded it experience errors, and it gives crappy data on Windows 7. I am now using the tone generated by my program, fed into a program called Visual Analyzer that drurb clued me into.

My "analog" signal generator is a cheap MP3 player loaded with sine waves of different frequencies, and some noise signals. That's remarkably handy, BTW, and the MP3 format does well with simple signals like that. I don't know of a cheaper, or more accurate "toolbox" signal generator.

So I am hobbling along. Unfortunately, I have some side projects that demand Windows 7, because a friend for whom I wrote some software now wants it up and running in Win7, and I also use some embedded development tools. None of this is music related -- yet. :D
 
fdeck's comments should be seen as to why some of us haven't migrated to computer based test equipment. If somebody as smart about computer stuff like fdeck is having these problems, imagine the rest of us dealing with these problems. I need to get measurements done and move on!

An MP-3 player (I use an I-pod w/ transformer isolation out in the field) makes a great signal generator. They are cheap, portable and battery powered meaning instant AC line isolation.

Unless, of course, you routinely use tens of thousands of $$$ worth of computer-controlled laboratory-grade DSPs and analysis equipment in addition to stand-alone devices. I'm happy to live in such a toy store! :) Short of that, there are some decent hardware/software packages out there, pricey as they may be.

I work in the toy factory. My employer is one of the originators of DSP. :D

The PC works OK once you work around a couple of limitations, one of which is figuring out how to turn off all the bells & whistles after upgrading the OS. And I suppose that I can't really fault Microsoft for not supporting my program, which I wrote 10 years ago using Windows NT system documentation. :rolleyes:

One thing I can't do is measure up into the RF, which I imagine would be important for fiddling around with switchmode gear.
 
UPS just dropped off the goody box from Digikey so I can breadboard this up - however, I've got a wedding to prepare for (mine!) so probably won't have time to tinker further until the new year. More news when I have some...
 
I'm jumping in to the forum late here, but I thought I should share my 4th design/attempt at making a piezo pu for the doghouse. (For those who are inclined to tinker.)

It has not quacked and can be tweaked easily on the spot to change it's responsiveness- just what I was looking for. It was a tedious, royal PITA to assemble, but ultimately worth the hassle.
* .02" PZT crystal from Trout Cove
* Mogami mini lav-mic cable
* Neutrik cable mount jack
* copper foil w/conductive adhesive
Other odds & ends include the thin slices of hardwoods, thick CA glue, rubber grommets & cable tie for mounting, packing tape as an insulator.

This is a very elegant looking unit. Pray tell, where does the element mount on the bass, under the bridge foot or in the wings? Could you post some sound clips? The Neutrik jack is a very nice touch.

Ric- thanks for the compliment. This one is a bridge under-wing mount. The hardwood sandwich is from scrap pieces of maple/mahogany/ebony.
A friend asked me "why the different woods?" The ebony is durable, the mahogany where the PZT lies is particularly easy to cut & shape and the maple is a nice visual contrast, i guess...

I made the fit under the wing to be relatively tight in the summer and this month, I carry some scrap paper along in case the fit is too loose. Varying the pressure and changing the angle can make significant changes in tone- very low tech, but effective. This type of element sounds best with a tighter fit.

I have a recent live guitar/bass duo CD around here with the pu running through a Clarus/Acme rig.

Obviously needs some tweaking still, those shoulders aren't nearly as square as would be ideal. Still, that's a nice deep notch there.
 
It's a start. As you likely know, the trick is to get the transition slopes to be well beyond the -9 dB/oct or so that you have. What design are you using? Back when I was doing similar stuff, I used a twin-t design to achieve a bandstop (notch) filter.
 
It's a bridged differentiator - twin-T is a bit of a pain to make variable. Next step is to go through my pile of caps to find a closer matched set and add trimmers to get all the resistances lined up nicely.

Just a question of finding time to play with it.
