If you could work with any drummer..

Suppose you were building the rhythm section for your music. Of course, there's you on bass, but who would you choose for drums? Chime in with whoever and give some reasons if you want to.

Me, I'd choose Vinnie Colaiuta. The best explanation is to listen to his stuff. I'd recommend starting with Zappa.

Wow, that's a toughie.

Vinnie Colaiuta for me too, although Peter Erskine takes a close second. And then there's Brian Blade, Manu Katche, Steve Jordan... wait did you say just one drummer?

:)

Uriel Jones
Jack DeJohnette
Bernard Edwards
Brian Blade [met him on Friday night!]
Vinnie Colaiuta
Peter Erskine

It would be a tremendous education to jam with any of them. More than anything I think i would just want to talk to them about their lives & music-get the wisdom and insight that they have from their experiences. Top it off with a jam session.

Kenny Aranoff--always liked his playing. Solid without a lot of needless "look at me," which is how I want to be as a bassist

Matt Sherrod--formerly with Beck and currently with Crowded House. I'd heard an album track on CH's Time on Earth released last year that had a drum part I simply did not like. Immediately I started singing a drum part which made more musical sense. Matt wasn't the one who played on that song's recording, and when I saw them live last September the part he played was the same thing I'd been singing. I even got a chance to talk to him after the show and told him about that. So we've already got "psychic" communication going on. :D

Levon Helm. My definition of the working musician.Solid but not over the top.Right where I live. For a more rock approach? I'd have to go with Martin Chambers though.
