If you could work with any drummer..

Biggest revelation of the past 5 years has been Keith Carlock. For anyone like me, who grew up listening to Led Zep and realized somewhere along the way that there has never been another one like Bonzo, you need to check him out. I hope this analogy makes sense to someone else besides me - Carlock is a jobber who plays with Steely Dan and Sting and does a lot of funk fusion gigs on the side. Check him out with Wayne Krantz and see if you get an echo of Bonzo.

(Tip of the hat to Kenwood - for pure pocket, he's the man)

Lots of GREAT drummers mentioned already and from that list I'd love to play with Ringo, Bonham, Stubblefield, Jim Keltner, and more....

However, for my current tastes I'd flip to play with:

Zigaboo Modeliste (the Meters)

Levon Helm (the Band)

Carlton Barrett (Bob Marley)

Al Jackson (Booker T. and MG's)

Seems like I could keep this list just going and going, but what I find really interesting about this post is imagining WHAT I'd play and how I'd feel and react if indeed I was in the room and just improvising (in the styles they are known for) with ANY of the above!!! I think it's pretty inspiring really... in fact I think I'll go grab my bass and dream.

Wow, so many great guys out there, but the question eluded to picking one. So, if I could only pick one guy, +1 for Steve Jordan. No disrespect for the great drummers I play with on a regular basis, though. I'm a lucky bassman.

billy cobham

Wow, did it really take 51 posts before someone mentioned Cobham?

I guess his bombastic fills can overshadow what a stunning groove player he is -- but if I could limit Billy to a 4 piece kit he'd quite possibly be at the top of my list. His pocket is so freakin' deep, infectious, and inspiring that I can't imagine it not elevating my playing to have him kicking my butt.
