+1 to the other cats who mentioned Carter Beauford... Yes, he is a "busy" drummer but I see that as the ultimate test to playing a support role and keep my lines simple and solid to make room for all of his notes.
Same with Mike Clark and Kenwood Denard...
But as far as being in a band with someone, ?uestlove would be my pick... A hip hop/pocket drummer... Or Jan Kincaid of Brand New Heavies, one of my all time favorite bands.
Yep, huge props to Stefan Lessard for finding the right combination with a guy of Beauford's caliber. Lessard's tone has always been a little mushy for my taste and he doesn't get much love in the mix but I love his approach. His work on "41" (Crash) is some of the most lyrical, beautiful work supporting a singer that I've ever heard.
Dave Grohl because he is rock solid and relentless!
Dave Tough for the same reason.
Kevin Ellman 'cuz I like his licks.
Steve Ferrone cuz he is soooooo smooth.
I'd go Ringo, but would prob ask him to tell stories all night instead of playin'.
Aynsley Dunbar because he's on a lot of my fave recordings.
Tony Thompson = same as above! Powerful!
I LOVE playing with my jazzy drummer Ted Owens. The guy is so effortless. Makes a three piece kit sing!
Bill Bruford
Narada Michael Walden
Joey Baron
Gene Lake

Plus yet another vote for Kenwood Dennard & Mike Clarke & John Bonham & Steve Gadd
