When I split with my ex, I had to sell all my gear to get back on my feet. I turned back to drawing, which I hadn't taken seriously since my early 20's (I'm in my mid-40s). Actually, I started doing that before it all went to hell with her. What was really fascinating though, I was visiting a friend, and my sudden interest in drawing came up. His wife works with teens that have behavioral issues, she said that's one of the coping mechanisms they use with their patients.
Anyway, what really sucked back then, was when I'd hear a bassline I liked, I couldn't just go home and learn it (or murder it). What was also frustrating, every bassline I heard would remind me" I don't have a bass."

I would shift focus to improving on the banjo. But if I wanted to play in in a band in front of people, I would learn keys and probably be able to join any local band I wanted due to keyboard players being rarer than common sense these days.

If it's not because of my hands, I'd likely leave strings for woodwinds or brass. Though I have considered cello before too - since I already tune in Fifths, it'd be a natural transition.

Frankly, Bassoon (because I own one, but can't play it well..yet) or Saxophone because I've always wanted to learn.

Outside of music/instruments, and at 55 y/o, I've recently went back to skateboarding. Long distance pumping (LDP) and I did almost 10 miles yesterday.

If the body gives out I'll go back to flying airplanes or maybe sailing again. Nothing like black holes on Earth - be it with strings, in the air or on the water...

I enjoy preparing for and performing for a live audience of those that appreciate music. Money is clearly the lesser motivation.
