I'd get a Rickenbacker 4003 because, well, Rics are my favourite bass to play. Ever. They feel nice, they sound great and just about everything about them I like. The 4003 has some annoying hum to it, but I've seen pedals that can help with that. Anyways, a ric. Right now I'm working on some money but sadly it'll take a couple of years........................

Unless we're talking about used instruments, there is honestly nothing on the market for <$2k that appeals to me.
A Birdsong Corto2 comes close.
