Had 2 grand until a few days ago, spent it on a Landing T-bass, which should be arriving in a few days... because my birdsongs have spoiled me, and now I can't go back to playing 34'', but I'm still looking for a shortie that can nail the tone in my head.

I did and I bought my DD2 ray. I started my quest hating rays then did some research and found that most of the bass tones I enjoyed from records were on a ray. then the DD2 came with ebony and that sold it.

If i had 2 g's again I would grab a fretless ray preferably with an ebony board.

If I found one, tried it and liked it, I'd go for a Rickenbacker 4003. Then I'd use the extra cash for a cool amp to go with. I'd also consider a P/J bass.

If I had 2 grand I'd consider two Mesa PH 212's.

But..if I wanted a bass and had 2 grand to spend, I'd look for a Spector Euro series with a P/J pickup set. I would want that grinding Alice in Chains tone from the bass.
