If you had to keep just one?

Voted something else because I'd want a 5 with dual humbuckers to cover all (or at least most) of the bases if I could only have one.

I just play for fun, but even I have 2 basses: a 4-string with rounds for slap, and a 5-string with flats.

Do you own any other basses? I ask because if you sell either one, then you’ll still be in possession of a very fine instrument. If it needs repair, falls and breaks, or is otherwise out of service, then you are in possession of NO basses. Bad spot to be in.

Considering that ^ (alt. tuning etc.), I feel the 5 string may be the better option.

Based on the genre, I’d say the Sadowsky. And if you feel the drop D covers the alt tunings as well as the 5 that’s my vote.

But as a gigging player, I just have to have a backup. Even if they don’t both go to every gig, I like having it ready to go at the house In case I notice something off and can’t address it in time.

Plus, what if you join a new band someday that really requires a 5, or Stingray sound?

PS the band premise sounds interesting. Would love to hear some of the originals, and/or some of the covers you do

I have two basses and find I only play one or the other at a gig. I can go with either one but want to end up with a single bass to cover everything I do. I play in a neo-soul, Americana band that does half originals and half covers. The principal songwriter uses alternate tunings on guitar and a capo frequently. The Sadowsky has a D-tuner.

I have a better solution. Buy a 3rd bass to work with this gig.

I thought that we were supposed to let the BL decide, and that it was poor form to "switch it up" simply because we owned more than one instrument. Doesn't the comfort and ease of the other band members mandate that the BL selects our instrument and rig for us?

My mouth started watering when I got a look at that Sadowsky. Literally. Ok, sure, my wife is baking some chocolate chip cookies, but still, that axe is gorgeous and I know how good Sadowsky Js sound.

I was tempted to vote Ray and tell you I’d take the Will Lee, but apparently @JLY has dibs.

You could have had an option to sell the car or something. Those 2 cover a lot of sonic territory and it’s got to be hard to part with either.

Tough call...after many years of lusting after Stingray 5's, I have owned 3 in the past 10 years...and I sold all 3 immediately after buying them, they clearly are not my thing even though I think they look awesome. I have never owned a Sadowsky, but I do know what a jazz bass sounds like and have owned numerous nice jazz basses so I had to vote for the Sadowsky.
But if you love 'em both, I would keep both.
