If you have a 1990's Ampeg 810...

OK, it's time to get deeper into this........

What you want is the numbers off the CONE of the speakers...... THAT will tell something.

It is on the backside, hard to see because of the basket. Printed in white/gray usually.

I do NOT know what cone numbers should be present, so you'll be making all of us "Ampeg 810 experts" at once!

its hard to say since i don't have a 90's cab to compare it to, but i remember thinking the same thing. the newer ones do seem darker than the 90's ones. and i don't think that it has to do with them being broken in, or the cones being 'aged' or dried up either. it'll be nice to see if someone reports in with a late 80's early 90's cab to see if they are indeed different speakers (codes) . i used to play thru two late seventies/early 80's angleback cabs all the time and i'm sure that they were brighter and less tubby. i had a brand new one in '78 (matching head and cab) and that amp rocked and it never lacked any mids or highs.

What does the number on the cone tell you?

If teh same speaker turns up with very different cone numbers (and hasn't been reconed) then you might expect, after a pattern shows up, that the cones were changed at some point in time. That might explain a change in sound.

Typically if a speaker was approved as an 86-032-01, it would sound the same, and act the same, so that it would be interchangeable.

Non-interchangeability means a new part number.

OK compared to John's my 2005 unit is the same number 451041-10 but the code below it is: 047 05. I think this DAY AND YEAR... 047th day and 05 year, where Johns is 262nd day and 03 year for the cone. Both have the same part number.

OK here's the thing to think about Jimmy, the very earliest cabs were plywood. The first slant backs were plywood but we dont know for sure the actual speakers 50 or 100 watt... We need to find 74-85 cabs I think.

Then the switched to Chip Board cabs... OSB... These are probably the start of the dark cabs. Now they are plywood again but thinner plywood and slightly brighter.

BOB

I'm pretty sure the earliest towel bar cabs used Eminence 50 watters. You may be right about the OSB, Bob, but I've used LOUD cabs and thought the same about them.

Honestly, I shouldn't obsess so much on them, but I seem to have done so and it's out of my control.

Sorry for the delay...

I believe it says:

451010-1

Well, first, I don't actually know the numbers to expect. The first suggestion about number and date is probably correct.

WVbass we need the date of you speaker as per the serial.... so we can start making sense of this. maybe you posted it but if so I missed it.

The theory is that at some point the cones changed, possibly due to the other manufacturer going out of business, or dropping that part number, etc.

Paper cones for speakers are funny things, stupid little insignificant changes make bigger differences.... and the 'same" cone from a different maker will have slightly different pulp, pulp processing, pulp stirring, pickup molds, drying, thickness tolerances, treatments, etc. All basically that same thing as saying it is NOT the same thing.

If cones changed, then we will start to see a difference in marking as of some date. Then one of us who still has some "pull" with Eminence may have to ask some questions.

Maybe we can confirm Jimmy's suspicions.

I tend to believe him when he says he hears a difference. It might be speaker drivers, or it might be something else. But he hears it, and he sounds like a guy who has played a bunch of different stuff, played all sorts enough to notice patterns.

I've known a guy who could pick up and play a guitar blindfolded and correctly name the woods used and the type of joints used in the body. He just had been playing forever, was a GREAT player, and had used a LOT of different guitars.

...
And the numbers from a speaker:
810speaker.jpg

...

I believe in Eminence' eyes that speaker is known as "Spec. No. 10324".

The 10 part means it's a 10 in. speaker.

Armed with the Spec No., one can write to [email protected] and ask for the Thiele-Small parameters. It's been my experience that Eminence won't always release them for current production OEM speakers, but it's always fun to ask!!!

I'm not nearly that good, bro. But thanks for believing me. I have a feeling we'll get this sorted out before long. Going to shoot an email to Eminence about it shortly, too.

Hey Jimmy and all, i have a 92 810E w/ a serial I81DEA0009. It has the the same speakers as wvbass. 86-032-01 with everything on that sticker saying the same stuff just mine is printed a little closer together. BUT....the cone #s are different. Mine says 451010-1 352. I would be snapping picks but i'm between band practice and an exam i'm studying for! Hope this help Jimmy. Oh, and I love the way mine sounds but if anyone knows which 810's are "better" I would love to hear!
