At 58, I started learning both drums and bass. I'm farther ahead on drums. I'm looking for a good bass instructor. I do internet lessons, but I learn better with a live person, I guess. My drum instructor comes over once a week. I really enjoy this.

Started on drums, moved to trumpet, then to bass at 22. Headed back to drums.

These days, I mainly play bass and guitar, because it's lighter than carrying a stack of keyboards around.
The one instrument I always wanted to try was violin, but my fingers are a bit large for that. Someone suggested trying cello instead, but I'm not as keen on the idea.
Right now, I'm learning my way around the Glissentar (which is a variation on the Oud). It's made by Godin, is fretless and meant to be tuned like a standard guitar. I've been experimenting with traditional Oud tunings and also doing drop D and playing it like a slide guitar. It's great for that. Only thing that sucks about it is they stained the ebony fingerboard and it always leaves you with seriously black fingers.

Sax. I tried twice, was previously a trumpet player. Too many keys on a sax!
I've always said that if there is such a thing as reincarnation that I will either come back as a cat or a harmonica player, so I guess my answer is harmonica. I also enjoy playing my didgeridoo.
If not bass then I’d want to play: cello, French horn, alto flute, tenor sax, drums - in that order.
In real life I can also play guitar, some banjo, and pretty much anything with frets and strings, some keyboard, hand percussion, wind synth, and various early woodwinds.

I picked up a Roland RD-2000 so I'm back at the piano again and haven't touched my Harmonicas in quite a while but if I was younger the Pedal Steel would be it for me, I had a 9 pedal Sho-Bud for a while but too many instruments and not enough time.
I like to pick up banjos in music shops on the rare occasion I venture into one. I do play acoustic guitar or dobro here and there, so I would probably go that route if bass wasn't an option for me. Maybe I would have kept a trombone around too if I didn't get so into bass guitar.

Saxophone. I played tenor sax about the same time I started on bass (more sax gigs than bass gigs) but I think I’d have gone to baritone sax before much longer if the bass hadn’t worked out well. Doc Kupka makes me sit back and smile.

For me it was the other way around, I have played piano, saxophone, guitar, drums in the past and never really even thought about playing bass until middle age... and darn it wouldn't you know it's the one I love best. (I was friends with 2 really good bassists so that was never a need in my youth)
All I'd need is a Fender Blues Junior, a bullet mic an a half a dozen harps. Everything would fit in the back of the amp, I'd carry it like my grade school lunch box. Ah, the good life!
