No need to limit yourself. I play lead guitar in one band; lead guitar/keys in another, and up until recently bass in a third. I sing lead in two and backup vocals in a third.

I started on guitar before moving to bass. I still play both regularly, but I'm personally just wired for bass. After I smashed a finger (shower door) two months ago I couldn't play either guitar or bass for a couple of weeks, then I could play bass, but not guitar. Concentrating on bass now has clearly demonstrated to me that I'm a bass player and if I didn't still love the instruments I should sell them for the money.

Cello, I used to take cello lesson when I was younger. However, there was no way to make the cello quiet. Less loud sure but not quiet. So when I had time to practice in the evenings my father would already be asleep. Bass I could practice with head phones or just not plugged in.

Tough call, playing bass has really influenced how I approach other instuments like synths/modular synths and so on. Ultimately it would be some form of electronic music that I would persue so I guess I will just say synthesizers but that means a lot including hardware/software/drum machines/FX and so on.

Played synth keys on stage, still have my Yamaha DX7 and Ensoniq ESQ1. Count me in as a fan of the Hammond tonewheel organ, with a real Leslie spinning away...

However - an instrument that has always intrigued me was soprano sax, and the EWI (electronic wind instrument). Here is a nice piece, Bob Mintzer with Yellowjackets

If I did not play bass I'd play electric guitar full-time. Started on it back in 1997 and picked up bass a couple years later. I still strum from time to time.

I think I'm a decent guitarist, but whenever I try to get guitar gigs, they always want me to play bass. Guess I'm typecast around here, and I should just take it as a compliment. I also love synth stuff.

As easy as it would be to say guitar. I think my eccentricities would led me down the road of pedal steel guitar or something similar.

Also, discovering the Doors right around the time I started really being interested in music probably would have driven me to play keys/piano.
