I'm banning myself from using the first five frets

I've got 24 frets....they're there for a reason...

+1. 24 over 5 strings definitely makes for a large range of possible notes to use, but i do find myself lacking sometimes in the B-string area. as it is now, i generally only use it to play E's n F's a little higher up; would definitely be a good idea to get more use of it. as far as using all the frets, i think i even out the playing time across the board.

what got me to branch out was to do tons of scale/arpeggio exercises, drills, and chords.. just build up your chops and play around with octave jumps n watnot.. that should at least help u get out of that first five fret range in the beginning..

Excellent post, IMHO!

Octave jumps helped me the most in the early days, and, hey, they still do, b/c they're such a reliable way to get to the next octave :) By utilising these jumps, you'll find yourself all over the fretboard in no time, and all this by employing the same finger-positioning, with different spacings, yeah.

Then you can experiment with sliding into the octave rather than jumping, and...just here, the opps are countless and I've known plenty of bassists who feed off this more than off any other tasty technique (not that I'm recommending such one-trick-bassiness).

Nice! :hyper:

Its because the "Freewill" solo is played mostly below the 5th fret :hiding:

Not funny!

Hehe Funny enough I stick to around frets 5 to 9 with some occasional open strings....

Think WLL and D&C by Zep. D&C has only 3 notes above the 5th iirc....

Damn...I love Zeppelin.

I'm not using frets 1, 4, 5, 6, 9, 14, 16, or 20.
I'm also not fretting my E string or my D string.
I've decided not to pluck my A or G string.

I think I'll play some jazz.

Huh?

I suggest using no frets and playing only quarter tones or other microtonal intervals......:eyebrow:

Then it might sound like Free Jazz!! :p
My gigging bass is fretless...

:D

I figure anybody who likes the Zep can't be that bad ;) :D

And D&D goes quite well with Zep, but its much better with LotR :p I say that as a D&D fan to.
Leaves are falling all around,
Its time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, Im much obliged
For such a pleasant stay.

But now its time for me to go,
The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain,
And with it pain,
And its headed my way.
Ah, sometimes I grow so tired,
But I know Ive got one thing I got to do,

Ramble on,
And nows the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
Im goin round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
Ive been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Got no time to for spreadin roots,
The time has come to be gone.
And tho our health we drank a thousand times,
Its time to ramble on.

Ramble on,
And nows the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
Im goin round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
Ive been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

I aint tellin no lie.

Mines a tale that cant be told,
My freedom I hold dear;
How years ago in days of old
When magic filled the air,
Twas in the darkest depths of mordor
I met a girl so fair,
But gollum, and the evil one crept up
And slipped away with her.
Her, her....yea.
Aint nothing I can do, no.

Ramble on,
And nows the time, the time is now
To sing my song.
Im goin round the world,
I got to find my girl, on my way.
Ive been this way ten years to the day, ramble on,
Gotta find the queen of all my dreams.

Gonna ramble on, sing my song
Gotta keep-a-searchin for my baby...
Gonna work my way, round the world
I cant stop this feelin in my heart
Gotta keep searchin for my baby
I cant find my bluebird!
Id listen to my bluebird sing but I cant find my blue bird
A-keep-a ramblin baby...
