I'm flabbergasted by my new bass!

I still remember, clearly, the summer day I slowly and carefully opened the case of the 1957 Precision Bass that had been traded in on a guitar at Turner Music in my home town. I worked there and spied the case laying the back room. As soon as I opened the case I knew I would have right then and there. I gigged that bass for fourty years and had no "problem" with the Singlecoil as it simply requires riding the volume control keeping it off when not in use and "hands on metal" when on. With plenty of bad stage lighting including neon.

I've always thought the basses looked cool; but, mainly figured they weren't very practical.

I have a '55 P and it's wonderful to play and hear. Those single coil's sound nothing like a Jazz and they are a fuzz further from the bridge, but I've never measured it. They have a bigger sound and often brighter in some respects, but not in a bad way. I also have a Regenerate Heritage Plus (think '55 super P/J w/Nordys) and it sounds great as well. There have been rigs and strings (rounds), that don't sound good to me. Currently I have TIs on the Fender and EB Cobalt Flats on the Regenerate. Run through an Ampeg V4B AV and like cab and they sound great. I've never noticed a hum issue with either one, but turn one PU off on a Jazz and you generally get hum unless you're at home.

That I don't know. Someone with more technical knowledge might be able to help there. I assume as far as sound goes, there's some difference in turns of the wire that account for some of it. I just know that to me a J neck pickup and a pre '57 pickup don't sound the same. As far as the hum goes, I may be the exception, but I don't recall a hum in any situation. I'm sure there are some places where I wouldn't have the same good results.
