I'm metal stupid.

Basically you need to listen to the bands in my signature...

For gothic metal: Old Theatre of Tragedy and Tristania

For death metal: Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Dying Fetus

For black metal: Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth (ok BM fans, I know they aren't really BM :ninja:, but... )

For 80's metal: Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, Ozzy, Skid Row

For prog metal: Dream Theater, Symphony X, Queensryche

For thrash/melodic type of stuff: Dark Tranquility, Soilwork, old In flames

For Classic type stuff: Black Sabbath, Alice Cooper

BTW, do you consider bands like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and others "metal" bands?

- From "the promised land of metal" (Finland)

Just because a lot of these newer bands are using dropped D and C guitars and bass doesn't make them metal. They just want a heavier sound. I guess my point is heavy-detuned guitars don't make metal "Metal." For example, I will throw a well known band Metallica pre 1982 for an example all those songs are in standard tuning and to me personally are the opitomy of the style of metal that I like. I prefer bands which can have a sick instrumental then in the next bar have a head-banging thrash riff. There is no rule that says metal can't have complex harmonies (many do) while also having piledriving power chord riffs at the same time. However I do not like the symphonic metal crap with some high-pitched guy singing about medieval knights and whatnot. In my opinion straight thrash-metal is the only way to go. So check out anything in the trash metal category.

Peace, Daemonbass

I'll second the Gamma Ray notion. I really can't get into Black and/or Death metal, but I can tolerate power metal just fine. Check out the songs "Rebellion in Dreamland" and "Man on a Mission." Basically, their whole Land of the Free album is great.

Other than that, check out GWAR. GWAR rocks. Saddam A Go-Go is one of the best songs from the post Gulf War period, period. Brendan?

Nobody's mentioned Electric Wizard yet, so I will ;)

I don't listen to much metal these days, but for some reason have really gotten into Electric Wizard. They're a three piece (or were, the lineup changed recently), bass drums guitar and the guitarist sings. I guess they're sometimes referred to as "doom metal," sometimes as "stoner metal." Sometimes they're droney and repetitive, other times they use effects and are more psychedelic. Usually the lyrics are hard to understand (fuzz on the vocals). But there's something there that kept me coming back. I picked up the first two albums, "Electric Wizard" and "come my fanatics..." at Amoeba in Berkeley for $9.95 and it was worth twice as much!

Some distorted bass, some bass with effects too.

I heard a little Blue Cheer last night, I don't know if they qualify, but they are Sabbath Esque, but I dig their tone more. I haven't heard enough to decide who I like better though. That said, Masters of Reality kicks ass. Same goes for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. I think the only two must own albums from Sabbath. Paranoid had the hits, the self titled was pretty good too.

In the "Stoner" catagory, I really dig Monster Magnet. Dopes to Infinity seems to be their best work I've heard. It's a really great album. Once again, not hella metal, but cool.

Aggg, how could I forget Gwar. Ragna Rock N' Roll.

For thrash, you can't beat Testament. Unless you like something else :p Seriously, their old AND new stuff is awsome. Check out The Gathering for a prime example of a good, old metal band getting better and better...

Actually, this thread is great. I'm in the same category as basstriaxis; kept up with metal in the day, but now I don't know s**t. Good to hear the suggestions.

One more thing; I got a Dillenger Escape Plan album from some recommendation I read somewhere. Good god! I listened to it once or twice, but I value my migraine-free brain too much to listen to it anymore.

testament is good stuff, I remember learning some alex skolnick licks awhile back. He's doing jazz arrangements for rock songs now, he does a fun version of "Detroit Rock City"

Another classic metal band to check out is Savatage. Though Savatage was coming from a thrash background they pushed towards the more classical/epic side gradually. Chris Oliva was a killer player.
