My freshman year of college was very similar. I'm not saying I don't drink: I do. However, it's in moderation. Homecoming weekend, I had something like 29 or 30 drinks (tallied on the back of my hand) and my stomach hurt like hell until the next Thursday. I did it again the next Friday and ended up getting smashed again. I did this for an entire semester and felt pretty crappy all week around almost permanently.
Then I went home for Christmas break, where I won't drink at home. I live on a street with a bunch of little kids who look up to me, as a musician, a student and a number of other things. I won't let them see the weak side of me, and to me that's drinking. I don't want them getting an idea that it's cool, especially this young.
I come back from break, have about nine beers and feel fine, a bit of a buzz, and relax. And slowly I realized that getting drunk is fun, but it's not as fun as being with good friends. Sure, I'll knock back a few beers while at a party, but I won't get drunk anymore. I've been drunk once this semester as I watch my entire floor puke every weekend in the bathrooms, on the floors, etc.
For me, a case of Budweiser lasts me a good 3-4 weeks. And that's the way I'm happy.
