Your kids will remember what you love and are passionate about. It's hard to tell your teens to go find an interest when you sublimated yours for them.

Ultimately it's our contribution to life that matters, not the degree or the job or the money.

Sold all my "name brand" basses on eBay before the economy crash in 2008~2009 to fund my youngest son's college. No regrets because even the cheapo's can be made to sound great through the gear I kept. The only "name brand" basses here are Steinberger but they are the cheapos(wood). My XL2 TransTrem got sold.

I had done similar "sacrificial selling" in 1989 to move the family from Louisiana to Texas in 1989 when 60's T-Birds, a real Steinberger, an Alembic(2nd gen), and ALL amp gear got sold. Selling gear for son's college was actually easier because of the internet selling that was not available in 1988~89.

Wow, can't believe I'm reading this one. We are in (almost) the exact situation. Our son a Senior, AP classes since his Sophomore year and is in the Pitchers Rotation on the Varsity baseball team.
To the OP we haven't bought a car for him (or his football playing brother soon to get his license) Yet! And those 5:00 am practices are coming up again soon.
Congratulations to your son for the discipline it takes for taking on the AP.

Guitarist friend of mine at work told his son "if you get a four year scholarship to college I will buy you a new car". He son got the scholarship and he just showed me the new red SUV he just bought his son. His son is a musician too but got the scholarship in IT Tech.

The only reason I could afford all my toys is I never had kids. And as a bonus I've never had to change a diaper on my SVT.

Of course, if my Father thought like I do I would have never got my first bass....youre doing the right thing.

Not a father...but my dad made a lot of sacrifices for me...and I wasn't that great a son.
He sounds like a great kid....your heart will tell you what to do.

I'm a senior in highschool. That's cool what you're doing. I'd feel bad if my bad sold his collectables to get me something. Haha, but that's me. My parents do a lot for me, but I spend a lot of the money I earn on my gear. I work 5 days a week, and have for a couple years. I like paying for my own stuff.
Your son sounds straight forward, sell the gear you don't use and give him the cash. Or make a project with him. I don't know.
