I’m selling most of my amps to buy my son a cool graduation present. He’s a great kid. He’s in his senior year in high school. He’s been taking all AP classes since his junior year. He’s working on his Eagle project, runs cross-country and he holds down a job. He’s in a Honda Civic now and I want to do a serious up grade for him next June. It’s a heck of a sacrifice on my part to say the least and I do have some really cool stuff, but this would be a great way of showing him hard work pays off. I’m even going to let the old MG go also. Anyone ever do something like this?

What sort of an upgrade? Will the fuel economy improve or will it just be a flashier car? I'd think affordable to operate and dependable (Safe is my top concern but safe = $$) should be high priorities for a college student.

If you want to do something cool, don't sell the MG, fix it up with your son and give it to him. An MG is a special kind of car, as an owner you're accustomed to the looks you get from kids and girls when you drive one. You don't get that in a Honda or BMW. MY MGB is every bit as dependable as anything on the road, and a competent owner can fix almost anything using basic hand tools - that's a lesson that lasts a lifetime.

Yea here too, I am down to 2 basses, 1 amp and 1 cab, but you know what? It is all I really need, I had over 10 basses and never really played them all anyway, as long as I have enough to gig with I'm good!

i could name him, but lets say, he has been drumming for 30+ years, and in the '70's had an album produced by ian gillian, so he should have been good!

I sold a bass that was near and dear to me in prep for my son being born a few years back. It was pretty hard at the time, but I am glad I did it.

If they ask, they don't get. It's the ones that make the efforts that you do for no matter what it takes. At least that is how I am. I never got any help or breaks, heck when I was in elementary school my brother and I did yard work set up by my mother. The money always can back as Vodka bottles. I decided early NOT to be that parent and do whatever my children were deserving of .

Your heart is in the right place and your son sounds like he has wokrd hard. But assuming he's going to college he probably won't have much need for a car depending where he ends up going. I think a car is way more "important" in hugh school than college. Regardless, your thoughts to sell gear are very nice.

I'm with Carl on this one. A Civic is an ideal car for a young person; safe, reliable and gets good mileage. The models from a few years ago are superior to the latest Civic, according to Consumer Reports and some of the car magazines. It's possible you and he will be better off with the status quo unless his car is on its last legs.

Sell the stuff you can live without, and bank the money. Use it to give him a little helping hand as he needs it over the course of his college years. Keep the MG and will it to him - he'll appreciate it more when you are gone.

as someone who is about the same age as your son i'd say let him erm it. he already has a good car.
