Queens, NY
This was a weird day. I'm at the gas station. I almost never carry cash but I had a twenty in my pocket so I go inside and give it to the guy. I go pump my gas. Doesn't work. I knock on the window to where the guy is and point to the car. He does something on the register and gives me the thumbs up. I pump my gas. I'm not paying attention to the amount. There's no reason to. It should stop at twenty.

Suddenly the guy runs out and tells me to stop. It's at $27. I say "Oh look at that. Should've stopped at twenty right?" He tells me I owe him seven bucks. I tell him I don't have seven bucks and I don't owe him anything. He messed up. If he had asked nicely I probably would've gone inside and paid seven with my debit card. But he was being a douche.

He says to me "you're gonna give me seven bucks or we're gonna have a problem." Kinda took me by surprise. It's broad daylight. There are other cars and a bunch of people around. This is Queens New York on a sunny summer Sunday. Not exactly the middle of no where.

I chuckled and asked if he was serious. This kind of thing doesn't happen to me. In the middle of the day? People everywhere? And a little man a foot shorter and a hundred pounds lighter is threatening me. I put the pump back, close up my tank and get in the car.

He says "drive away and see what happens". I turn on the engine. He grabs the door handle. I ask what he's doing. He tells me I owe him seven dollars or we're gonna have problems. I pull on the door. He's pulling on the door. I let go of the door. The edge of it hits him squarely in the testicles and down he goes.

I get out of the car and ask if he's okay. He's down. Clutching. I say "you should get up man. You're gonna get run over". I get in my car and drive away. Strange day.

Oh boy. Good luck with that.
Worse case IMO, being the Devils advocate... Robbery, plus hit and run/assault, for the criminal side. A lawsuit on the civil side. Hope I'm wrong. Sure the guy might have been a d-bag. He shouldn't have grabbed on to your car. In the long run, that $7 might have been the cheapest gas you ever bought.
I hope your pullin' our legs on this one.

I considered that. It's all on camera. I'd be surprised if cops show up at my door. We'll see.

I'd be surprised if they don't. This is an easy one for them. Clear detail on the transaction, a clerk who can ID you and your car, plus he's pissed and willing to cooperate. Probably have video and your plate. Not much for a gumshoe to do put collect the pieces. They're all laid out.

Don't assume it's on camera. They may not work, or there could be a bad angle. Demand to see the camera footage if it gets to that point. And as always , deny deny deny and let your lawyer work it out.
Nice guys finish last in the legal system unfortunately.

It was a major brand gas station and I made a point to look for cameras when he started to get agitated with me. There were several cameras and I'm betting they work.

You paid, He screwed up. Then he messed with your car. I'm not sure you did anything wrong at all.

Edit: Of course I am biased due to being born and raised in Queens.

My bias is that of someone who grew up in farm belt. Clearly I don't know the nuances of life in Queens.

He paid twenty and drove off with twenty seven. It was a cash deal. How do they prove any wrong doing on part of the clerk. The clerk and the station are the harmed parties in this so nothing to prove about the clerk other than a threat to the OP when the clerk opened his door. Of course if a non-db clerk would have come out and acted like a reasonable person trying to get what was owed the station, it all might have gone down differently. Most assuredly, some adult supervision was needed.

How creepy is the Internet? Look at this screen capture....read Gorn Captain's post, then the ad underneath. Now, where did I put the aluminum foil?....

WOW! If that don't put the iron in irony, I don't know what does.
Perhaps it's a sign of a good omen for the Cap't?

-edit- Cap't Gorn, as your non-attorney, I advise you to take the fifth on this conversation from here on out. And I don't mean a fifth of Jack.
Please tell us you have fabricated all of thus.

You're in Nebraska? Don't you pump before paying there? Here we have to pay first. The pump shouldn't have gone last twenty.
